We've always liked the style and convenience of wall-mounted bottle openers. In fact, we have an antique one in the kitchen that our family and friends have used regularly for more than thirty-five years! So, when we bought a classic GMC Motorhome in 2019 and got involved in the owner community, we began to wonder what it would take to produce an opener with a stylized GMC Motorhome design for ourselves and our GMC'er friends.

After looking into low-volume manufacturing and gauging the level of interest, which turned out to be quite high, we commissioned a small batch of bottle openers in early 2020 that sold out almost immediately. These first ones were made from rough cast blanks that were then engraved using a CNC router and paint filled. They weren't bad, but we wanted something even nicer that would also be consistent from piece to piece.

We began to look into alternatives at the beginning of the Covid outbreak which slowed our progress considerably. The exploration included a variety of materials such as bronze and zinc-plated aluminum, and production methods like deep laser engraving which was gorgeous but would have been way too expensive to make.

Ultimately we decided to stay with stainless steel because of its weight, durability, and immunity to rust. But unlike the first batch, the designs are now embedded into custom molds. Once a piece is cast, the surface is polished to a mirror finish. Then, the CruzinGear logo is laser-etched into the base of the opener. Paint filling is no longer necessary because the contrast between the polished surfaces and the satin texture of the debossed (sunk-in) designs, and the shadows created by the debossing itself, create a truly stunning effect.
