Frequently asked questions
What is a mala?
A mala is a sacred string of beads used for meditation. Made with 108 beads, marker beads, a guru bead, cord, & a tassel.
Hand knotted between each bead for durability & easy use with meditation.
Each piece has meaning.
The 108 beads are chosen with different intentions for different bead materials. It’s 108 because it’s believed there are 108 stages on the journey of the soul. It’s also believed to be the number of times to repeat your mantra or to take a breath in meditation each day for enlightenment.
The knots represent the space between thoughts. The marker beads bring your mind back to meditation & keep it from worrying how much longer.
The guru bead represents the intention of the mala. The tassel is a symbol of spiritual connection.
What is a mantra?
Mantra is a Sanskrit word that means “mind vehicle,” “mind seed,” or “free from the mind.” A mantra serves as an anchor in meditation. They are repeated in the mind. Their sounds are believed to have energetic transmission. They de-excite the nervous system and allow for more subtle states of consciousness and deep, healing rest during meditation.
How do you use a mala?
Let it drape across your fingers so you can move it easily.
Place to guru bead between your thumb & index or middle finger. Complete one full breath (inhale & exhale) & silently repeat your mantra to yourself.
Move your fingers to one of the beads next to the guru bead, then the next bead, breathing in & out, repeating your mantra once per bead.
Finish at the guru bead.
When you have thoughts, let them come. Then, when you realize them, gently return back to your mala, breathing, & mantra. Make your mantra sound gentle, soft, & pleasing in your mind.
The repetition allows the mantra to plant the seed and mantra meditation is a powerful way to let go of stress.
Care instructions
If your mala needs cleaning you can clean it with damp cloth.
You can also damp and comb the tassel to clean it. Be gentle and don’t soak. It can be tempting to take a bath or swim with your mala, but it can weaken the cord or fray the tassel.
A mala is a sacred item. Keep it someone safe, somewhere special when not in use. All malas come with a bag for travel.
Feel free to wear your mala as a necklace or wrap it as a bracelet. They are durable enough to wear around.
With care, you mala will last many years.
Custom and personalised orders
If you have any questions or special request for custom orders or recreations, send me a message and I will respond to you.
What if my mala breaks?
If your mala arrives broken or damaged, you can use my exchange policy to have it restrung, fixed, or remade.
When a mala breaks, it is believed that means it is time to find a new intention and a new mala. The intention has been fulfilled or direction is needed elsewhere.
I do believe in special cases where a mala that breaks is still serving you. Contact me if you would really love your mala repaired. If it’s past the exchange date, I do offer repair services for a fee.
