A Cross-Cultural Dream Come True!

We are avid travelers always in search of an adventure!
Ben Chaffee and Alex Zinn have traveled and lived across the globe. As students, teachers, backpackers and art enthusiasts and collectors. From these experiences, Ben and Alex have developed relationships with communities and artists in many remote and culturally rich regions of the world. Their business Culture Cross works primarily with communities in Nepal, India and Southeast Asia.

In Nepal, Culture Cross works with the Tibetan communities. Tibetan people have always lived along the trade routes between Tibet and India. But when China invaded Tibet, a wave of Tibetan refugees flooded into the Nepali Himalayas. Culture Cross collects vintage art and hand crafted Tibetan jewelry from this community and in doing so supports a fragile community with a rich cultural heritage. Following the devastating earthquake in Nepal in 2015 Culture Cross raised over $20,000 to support aid efforts with an specific emphasis on rebuilding schools in the Kathmandu Valley.

In India, Culture Cross works with the tribal artisans from the desert villages of Rajasthan. These communities have been hand crafting jewelry and crafts with inlaid semiprecious stones since ancient times. Most of the themes of these pieces are spiritual, incorporating elements of South Asian folk lore and spirituality with Western motifs. Many symbols used, such as sacred geometry, can be found in the art of many religions across the world.

In Southeast Asia, Culture Cross works with the Hmong (Miao) communities. These communities live mostly in remote hill top villages across Laos, Vietnam and China where they live their traditional way of life and celebrate their ancient culture. Their jewelry plays a very important role in their shamanic belief system. According to the Hmong, their is a spirit world and a physical world which sometimes overlap. They believe that silver has the ability to bridge these two worlds. Elaborate silver jewelry is worn during ceremonies to help them communicate with their ancestors and bring good luck, or ward off misfortune. The jewelry from the Hmong is imbued with intrinsic cultural value that is evident by the style and feel of each jewelry piece.

Ben and Alex travel every year to meet with their friends in Nepal, India. Southeast Asia and other regions of the world. Every year there is something new that they found from each of these unique cultures. So be sure to follow Culture Cross and check back in often. You might just find yourself in an unexpected adventure.
