From Technology Sales to full time Woodworker

Woodworking has been part of my life from my teen years. From small projects helping my Dad to shop in high school to building my own darkroom workbench, complete with sink, drawers, hutch - the whole nine yards. I started in my early 20's buying power tools and ultimately owned a woodworking business where we designed and built custom furniture, did restorations on fine antiques, and also did the obligatory refinishing and repairs our clients requested.

That experience taught me volumes in design, dealing with schedules, material acquisition, time management for projects, and working with people who knew a lot more than I did about getting the 'right look' for their home or office. It was a blast going to work every day and working with wood but opportunities were opening up for a move into the technology sector.

Many of the tools I had back then are still with me and, after 20+ years working in Technology Sales, I decided it was time to do what I really wanted - build acoustic guitars! So I began setting up shop, acquiring the necessary tools and supplies to do build many guitars, and that became my 'job' every evening and day off unless we were at church.

Then, a couple of years ago, the company I worked for pulled out of the area. Sandy and I decided I would do woodworking full time in our home shop rather than find another technology company to work for - we liked me being home all the time instead of traveling.

We wanted to add a CNC to the shop, so with my days now free we bought a prototype 'beast of a frame' for the CNC and began preparing for the build. I sourced and designed the rest of the machine, including the electronic circuitry and related devices. The machine has been operational since late 2016, weighs in around 600 lbs. and is very rigid, accurate, powerful, and fast.

Many of the designs you'll see in our Etsy shop are possible because of the CNC and the equipment we chose for guitar building. I'm still working on the guitars but they have had to take a back seat for a while. Some of the items we build are with conventional woodworking tools - table saw, jointer, router, etc., some are a good mix of hand tools and power tools, and some use nearly every tool in the shop.

We're fortunate that God makes such beautiful wood - so colorful, figured, and gorgeous, and that we get to use that wood to create what we see in our mind's eye and in our dreams. Sandy often asks when we wake up, 'What did you design last night? Because you sure didn't sleep much and tonight I need rest, so don't design anything tonight, ok? Ok!' Yes, ma'am...

So what's the story on the Curly Maple and Walnut cross for the banner on our page? Sandy and I built that for our church just in time for Easter 2017. The cross is in a 'rock' we made of construction materials and painted to look like rock. Our youngest grandson came over, saw the rock, and said in a rather matter of fact manner, "That's a rock." We were satisfied that it passed the 2-year old test! The cross stands 9' high and is reversible in the rock base. The back side is Black Walnut and both that side and the Curly Maple side are all floating panels. They are made this way so they won't split with climate changes. The inside frame of the cross is a lightweight monocoque and bulkhead structure like an airplane fuselage. The cross and rock took 200 hours to build.

*** August 2018 ***
A new addition to this page is the first acoustic guitar I've built. It's a Honduras Mahogany Grand Auditorium with Sitka Spruce top, Zebrawood and Maple binding, and Walnut burl headstock, rosette, arm bevel, heel cap, and tail wedge. It's a bright sounding guitar with plenty of volume, due partially to the lightness of the guitar - 4 lbs. 2 oz. - and the fact that I did a French polish in an old world vintage patina. I measured the top Shellac finish at 0.001" so it is very thin, indeed.

Our story is a dynamic one and growing and developing every day. Etsy is another chapter and one that we're looking forward to seeing grow for years to come. We are eager to serve you and provide items that have meaning and purpose for you in your home, office, school, church, or wherever you choose to place these beautiful pieces of wood. You'll find that while I am very serious about woodworking and quality I write and describe items and procedures with a bit of whimsy and dry humor. Please don't let this bother you, just enjoy shopping at our Curly Wood Shop Etsy store and know that we're looking forward to working with you.

Thank you!

Sandy and I love working together, whether it's in the shop, the yard, a project for church - doesn't matter as long as we're together! God is amazing and we thank Him daily for putting us together. Thanks for visiting our Etsy shop!

Jean-Claude has been Blacksmithing since about 2011 and has built many custom knives. His work is very clean and every knife I've seen him build is beyond what I expected. We also both play guitar in the Praise Band at our church and his wife plays keyboard.

Frequently asked questions
To which countries do you ship?

Domestic and International shipping
We offer shipping United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

Currently we use USPS Priority Mail only and may look into other shipping options. We cannot ship to PO Boxes, so please use a physical address – thank you!

How will you ship my order?

Shipping is currently via USPS Priority Mail. Tracking numbers are sent when items are shipped. Shipping carriers do not always update shipped items the day they are shipped, in fact it has been noted that tracking updates have happened the day of delivery. We have no control over this. We ship USPS Priority Mail 2 to 3 day delivery in the US. Once the package leaves our shop we are at the mercy of the postal service for timely delivery.

If USPS tracking shows your package was "delivered" but you did not receive the package, we suggest you contact your local post office ASAP, check with family members and/or neighbors that may have received the package. We are unable to file claims for tracking that shows packages marked "delivered."

Who pays for customs and import taxes in International shipping?

*****Buyers are responsible for any customs and import taxes that may apply. ***** Curly Wood Shop is not responsible for delays due to customs. Please note that VAT or GST, etc. is NOT included in the price listed, and is not collected or remitted by us. As a US-based business, we are not legally allowed or registered to collect and remit VAT, GST, or other import taxes for other countries. International customers are responsible for any customs, goods and services taxes if due. The UK does have additional charges that must be paid by the customer in country.

What if the VAT, GST, or other fees are higher than we thought they would be?

We do not give refunds for any overseas customer that refuses shipment because of additional fees. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure the items being purchased can legally be imported. Curly Wood Shop is not responsible for any items confiscated by customs in your country. Please be aware that delays in delivery do occur from time to time due to international customs.

What are the estimated shipping times?

Estimated shipping times - USPS Priority Mail

North America: 1-3 business days
Canada: 1-3 weeks
Europe: 1-3 weeks
Australia, New Zealand and Oceania: 1-3 weeks

These are shipping estimates as provided by the carrier and we cannot guarantee them.

What if an item I ordered arrives damaged?

For products that arrive damaged, please contact us within 24 hours of receiving the product. A refund will not necessarily be given in this situation but a replacement will likely be the solution.

Each case is dealt with individually, good communication is the key. Thank you!

It is best to inspect your item when it is removed from the packaging. Take good photos and send to us via Etsy convo as soon as you notice the damage to your item, including the condition of the package. This gives us the best opportunity to make a claim with our shipping carrier if possible. If you are able to do this within a couple of hours of receiving the package that would be even better. You may also need to file a claim with the carrier.

What if an item I ordered is lost in shipment?

We are not responsible for lost or stolen items and/or packages. You’ll need to file a claim with the carrier. We’ll work with you to get a replacement out to you but this will not be a free replacement, the carrier should reimburse your costs.

What are your processing times?

Non custom items that are in stock generally ship in 1 to 3 days and custom items in 1 to 2 weeks, but some take up to 4 to 6 weeks depending on the item. However, please check the shipping time listed for each product as each product has its own production time and we update this frequently to give you our most accurate estimated time of production. Occasionally we experience unusually high volumes of purchases and even in these cases our production time averages 2 weeks or less.

In case of holidays, there may be a delay. If you need the item sooner than the timeline mentioned above, please contact us and we’ll do our best to work within your timeframe.

What if I order an item and you need to reach me but can't?

If you have placed an order and do not respond to multiple attempts to reach you through Etsy’s messaging system about a matter regarding your order, we reserve the right to fill your order as submitted even though we may have questions about your order. Understand that our reasoning behind asking questions is generally to provide a better solution and help you with your purchase.

What if I entered the wrong info for my shipping address?

*****VERY IMPORTANT!! Please be certain your address is correct when your order is placed, that is the address we’ll use on the shipping label. If you realize after your purchase and before we’ve shipped your item that your address is incorrect as supplied, then we can change it on the label. If we’ve already shipped it to the wrong address, based on the info you provided, then we have no control over that and you’ll need to track it to the address you supplied. *****
