My name is Jim, and I'm a former Cavalry Scout. 19D, if you know the MOS. I served with the 1st Armored Division out of Germany and the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas. I spent years doing the kind of work that requires you to pay attention to everything, move precisely, and get it right the first time. That training didn't leave when I took off the uniform. It followed me into the workshop.


I started working with wood during my time in the Army. Nothing formal, just a way to keep my hands busy and my head clear when I wasn't in the field. I built things for my own quarters, small projects, nothing special. But there was something in the process that felt familiar: the attention to detail, the patience, the satisfaction of producing something real with your hands. When I transitioned out of service, the shop came with me.
Custom Cavalry was born in Independence, Missouri, my home.

I started with a scroll saw and a belt sander and a head full of ideas. The laser engraver came later, and that changed everything. Suddenly I could take a family name, a unit crest, a couple's wedding date; any of it and put it into hardwood with a precision that matched what I knew from my time in the service. That combination of handcraft and technology felt right. It still does.

The name Custom Cavalry means something to me on both levels. The cavalry part is straightforward, that's who I was, that's the community I came from. The custom part is the promise: nothing I make is off-the-shelf, nothing is mass-produced, and nothing leaves my shop until it's right.

I don't have a warehouse full of pre-made products. I have a workshop, a laser engraver, a CNC router, a 3D printer, and the skills to use all of them plus the discipline to not cut corners.

My product range has grown as my skills have grown. I work with hardwood most often walnut is my favorite, followed by maple and cherry because it's honest material. It doesn't hide its nature. Laser engraving on a walnut surface shows you every grain line and every burn detail in a way that mass-produced gifts simply can't replicate. I also do CNC cutting for precision shapes, 3D printing for detail pieces and hardware, and epoxy inlay work for color and contrast. Each discipline has its place, and I use whichever one or combination is right for the piece.

I serve a wide range of customers, but a few communities feel like home to me. Military and veteran customers come first; I understand the culture, the significance of unit crests and challenge coins, the weight of a retirement gift. I know what it means to give something to someone who served alongside you, and I take that seriously. Wedding customers trust me with one of the most important purchases of their entire year, and I don't take that lightly either. Personalized cutting boards, engraved keepsakes, custom ceremony pieces that will be on their kitchen counter or their wall thirty years from now. I also work with corporate clients on branded gifting and bulk orders, and with individual buyers who just have a good idea and need someone who can build it.

The process is always the same, regardless of the order: I confirm every detail before I touch the machine, I send a digital proof for anything with personalization, and I don't release an order until it meets the standard I'd set for my own family. If something isn't right, I fix it. That's not a policy it's just how I work.

Everything ships from Independence, Missouri. Every piece is made by me, in my shop, with materials I've selected by hand. There's no outsourcing, no drop-shipping, no middleman between my workbench and your doorstep. When your package arrives and you open it, I want you to feel the weight of something built with intention not the hollow lightness of something churned out by the thousands.

What this work means to me, honestly, is simple: I spent years in the Army learning how to do hard things precisely and under pressure, for people who were counting on me. This is the same job, different tools. Every piece I make is going to someone's home, someone's ceremony, someone's deployment send-off or retirement party or kitchen table. It carries meaning before it even arrives.

My job is to be worthy of that.
