Designing Celtic Jewelry has been a fun and meaningful hobby.

I got into product design in 2012 when I discovered Shapeways. I was blown away by how accessible and inexpensive 3D printing had become. I had to try it! I had already had some experience with 3D modeling because I am an engineer by trade. I had to learn new software though. I picked up Blender which is one of the free CAD programs. It took several months to really learn both how to use the CAD software and how to create designs that could be made with 3D printing. Several of my first designs were rejected by Shapeways as "unprintable". They were very good at explaining what was wrong with my model, and I learned from my mistakes.

At first I designed several different things. One of my earliest designs was a vase. I also offered my services to people looking for a prototype product to be designed as a way of learning. At some point I tried making a pendant and a ring. I was inspired to do jewelry by many of the amazing artists on Shapeways. Some of my early Celtic designs were popular, so I was inspired to do more. That was when I really started to become proficient at designing for 3D printing.

I was drawn to Celtic knotwork for a number of reasons. My ancestry and heritage are part of it. It also seemed like a really neat application for 3D printing. Finally, I really liked Celtic knotwork. I like how they contain some elements that are simple, and some that are complex. I also like how they all seem to have some kind of spiritual meaning. In the past few years I have gone through a time where I look at things in a more spiritual way. At that time in 2012 my wife was pregnant with twins, and it does make you think about your ancestry, religion, and a lot of other things!

The "O" of D&O is for our 10 year old son, Owen. I've tried to make him a part of this. I've taught him how to do some basic designs and also how to use some of the Easy Creator apps that Shapeways has. It's been fun and he is a good critic! I really will ask his opinion on certain things. "Should it be this way or that way?" He always gives an honest opinion! I must also mention my wife, Kerri. She has been very supportive of this hobby while our lives are crazy raising 3 children.
