As long as I can remember I have found joy in creating. Whether it was using my grandmother’s quilting scraps to make my stuffed animals clothing, crafting projects with my mom, or building with my dad’s woodworking scraps; I always as my dad puts it “found something constructive to do”. They taught me the love of making and with that putting love back into the world with what I created. I was always making gifts for friends, family, and taught myself more and more about apparel sewing and quilting.
Even though my love for dogs and sewing has always existed, I did not start making dog apparel until my first fur-nephew was adopted. Wade is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met, but being abandoned at a young age had given him severe separation anxiety. Wearing clothing seemed to relax him, so I wasted no time in making him a little Deadpool jacket to match his namesake.
When I was finally able to adopt my first dog, Nala, I continued to make her little reversible jackets to wear so my short-haired girl wouldn’t be cold on our Milwaukee Riverwalk winter strolls. She loved walking up to strangers looking for compliments about how cute she looked. She loved her outfits but for some reason hated the ties on bandanas and would constantly chew on them.
So I began making bandanas for Nala… and every other dog we knew. Why not? I had the fabric and it brought them so much joy! I started to get inquiries about selling them from friends, family, and Nala’s daycare. I had always thought of opening a shop to supplement my teaching income, but I hadn’t found something I wanted to make over and over. I wasn’t getting sick of making bandanas or the excitement Nala had whenever I made her a new one.
In the fall of 2020 Dapper Doggo Co. opened online and I have loved creating high quality, handmade, fuss-free dog apparel ever since. Each item is made with care; I take pride in every pressed seam and well stitched item. Customers love the functionality, quality, durability, and most of all the fun of my products. My shop has allowed me to be part of an amazing dog community and most importantly spend more time with my daughter, husband, and of course my amazing dogs Nala and Koda.
Dogs give us so much love and are with us for such a short time. They love unconditionally and deserve to be spoiled. I hope my products give back some of the love that my dogs have given me. Today is always the perfect day to spoil your pup!
