One day, my friend Nina asked if she could commission me to paint her puppy, Freddy. It would be a surprise gift for her husband. She had several requests: that Freddy be wearing a dapper bow-tie, that I use a particular color palette (she sent me Pinterest photos), and that floating above his head would be a banner that said "The Cat of the World".

These details made the project much more fun and unique because the whole time I wondered...why a bow-tie? Is his neck chilly? Why not a business tie, or a scarf, or a gold chain? Why "The Cat of the World"? Does he display peculiar feline habits? Is he really a kitten in a puppy's body? My cats seemed equally perplexed.

These added musings sparked my imagination and best of all, Nina was pleased with the final product. And isn't any project that makes one curious and happy worthwhile? I think so. Thus, the opening of the Dapper Pet Portraits Etsy shop. Hurray!

Additional policies and FAQs

1) Email a clear photo of your pet, preferably in natural light. The perspective of the photo (from above, from eye level, from below) will be my reference for the portrait.

2) Let me know your preferences, if any:
- background color; clothing or props (e.g., tie, hat, jewelry, sweater, vest, scarf, favorite toy); special wording in a banner above/below your pet;
- notable personality traits (e.g., mischievous, loving, serious, philosopher, genius, food thief, playful, sweet, regal);
- composition (e.g., show the entire body?, just the head and chest?);
- border: how much white border do you want around the final painting? will it be matted and framed?

3) You will review/approve the portrait in 3 stages: digital b/w sketch, digital color sketch, final painting.

4) I will package and ship your portrait in acid-free paper and a stiff envelope. Very large paintings will be shipped in a tube.

If you have a project to illustrate a scene, concept or story rather than a simple portrait, email me your ideas and I'll send you a quote.
