Playful, original hand-printed textiles and tea towels for home and kitchen.

Art was always my favorite subject in school but I was captivated by oceanography in 7th grade and went with the flow. After a long journey through graduate school and then 10 yrs as a dedicated marine biologist/activist at a small non-profit, I was abruptly down-sized. Suddenly there was more room in my day for arts and crafts. I had spent years of joking about developing my own cottage industry some day- and now I had the chance.

I wanted to make something that would be functional, that would serve a purpose other than hanging on a wall. I had some experience with B&W photography and developing film, so I knew that I enjoyed thinking in graphic terms and, on the practical side, could also work in the dark- important for coating and developing screens for screen printing. I chose flour sack towels as the weave of the fabric is unique, they served a purpose historically (to hold flour and grains in the days before plastics) and because I found myself having a paper towel habitat that I really wanted to break.

I started with drawings of two of my chickens, and just looking at them now brings back a flood of memories of the individual birds- their particular voices, quirks and personalities. Now, I find inspiration for new designs every day, but I strive to represent the 'voice' or essence true to each subject within each design.

Why the name Dark Green Seal? According to my mother, by the age of 3 I was transformed at bath time into a self-proclaimed 'beautiful dark green seal' and would slip over the tub and slide around out of reach on the tile floor. Nowadays, I reserve my seal act for when I'm in the ocean, but have kept the name for my shop.

I'm a very enthusiastic marine biologist - but next to being underwater, I'm happiest creating things with my hands. Over the years I have worked in a variety of mediums-but now I'm having a lot of fun printing things I love onto functional products.
