Handmade Bohemian Jewelry, for that Little Touch of Exotic in an Everyday Life
I started off at an early age in the field of fine arts and illustration. Mostly working with pen and ink, oil on canvas and sculpting with clay; exploring form, texture and contrast, light and dark. During my studies, I started to branch out into computer graphics which led to a career in computer effects and cinematography. At the time, cinematography felt like a natural step for me, where I could create moving compositions. Mix that with lighting and it began to feel like painting moving pictures.
But through the years I began to feel the need to get back to my roots, back to working with my hands, the need to feel something more tangible than what was in cyberspace. So following my love of art and fashion mixed with the need to construct with my hands, I began to explore jewelry design. Before I knew it, I was hooked. My heart now sings with joy when I plan out a new design and I feel at peace while bending metal, hammering and shaping it into organic forms. I started to feel a natural buzz when combining colours and textures of the different stones and metals. This feels right.
My love for music, fashion and dance from around the world started to find their way into my pieces. Beads and materials from different cultures are commonly incorporated into my work. This inspiration drives my designs, giving them an exotic, bohemian touch.
I mostly work in silver and copper, combining them with various semi precious stones and glass. I especially enjoy utilizing the more unusual stones; ones with interesting texture and colours. The jaspers, the agates… so much wonderful variety. The many different blue tones of amazonite to the rich reds of carnelian and the special light play found in labradorite… I find all of them so fascinating and a joy to work with. I will usually spend hours, sometimes days mulling over which stones to use in a particular piece. Examining each stone in the light from different angles. Placing the stone with different beads, different combinations to get a feel for which elements have the best harmony together. Then when I'm ready to sit down and construct the final piece I bend, wrap and hammer the metal into organic shapes; wrapping and interweaving it with the stones and glass. Every piece is made with love and care and a passion for the art.
Daw B (Dawn Blair)
Owner, Maker, Designer, Photographer
During my early years I would sign my paintings with such vigor that I would leave out the N in my name. My signature Daw B became my nickname by my closest friends. Seemed fitting using it for my shop and to represent a return to my artistic roots.
Photographer, Love Of My Life
Mike, not only is he my photographer for those particularly difficult shots but he's also my moral support, my words of encouragement, my soul mate, my life. I'm eternally grateful for his unwavering support and endless supply of hugs :)
Hello there, welcome to Daw B. Designs and thanks for taking the time to look at my creations!
Each piece is created with the love of the stones and the joy of combining the colours and textures of all the materials.
