Decoupage Resurrection

Poor old Decoupage. Misunderstood and underappreciated. Ten years ago, Janna Howell discovered this low level of public opinion when she started telling people about her new hobby. At the mere mention of the word “decoupage” there was grimacing or rolling of eyes while recalling a mother or auntie who made flimsy items covered with bunny angels or something.

But Janna didn’t see it that way. What with the great advances in craft and computer technologies, she saw the possibilities of design and color combinations, making the versatility of decoupage endless. And she went wild, starting out on boxes and trays, and even spilling out onto the wall and doors of her home. It took her about four years to decoupage her whole apartment, including the TV.

Decoupage is meticulous and time-consuming. It is completely handmade, from start to finish. Janna has her boxes made from straight-grain pine, sturdy yet not heavy. Paper designs are individually hand-cut and glued on. She often adds glass crystal jewels, handmade ornaments, gilding and velvet linings. The box is finished with varnish or epoxy resin which gives it a glossy, smooth sheen, as if sealed in molten glass.

The decoupage under glass plates, is also called 'reverse decoupage' because it is all done from the back- paper images are glued to the back of the plate.
