About

What's autonomy got to do with it? The fine art and craft of body politics.

It can be tempting as an artist to create without thinking. To simply produce what one likes, rather, than what one questions. Issues of process aside, it is far simpler to make without research or reflection. Where critical theory, art history, and multiplicity of meaning are considered- a different kind of artwork emerges.

My interest in the figure began as a child. I can not say I questioned why I often sat in school, head buried into my desk, awkwardly trying to reproduce classical nudes instead of taking notes. What I did wonder, was why my teachers would frown upon it. It took years of life experience before I began to grasp the conceptual complexity that is artistic nakedness.

What became evident, through years of painting pretty pictures of beautiful women, was that there was something deeply unsatisfying about these images. Perhaps this troubled me because I am a woman. Seeing other women, or myself in a self-portrait, as an object of fancy is a limited offering of what the scope of female-ness embodies.

John Berger addresses this schism in his 1972 BBC series, "Ways of Seeing".

"There is a great difference between being seen as oneself naked, or seeing another in that way, and a body being on display... Amongst the tens of thousands of European oil paintings of nudes there are but 20-30 exceptions, paintings where the artist has seen the woman revealed as herself."

What does it mean to be presented as oneself in a work of art for a woman? Each of my paintings is an allegorical portrait that is a syntheses the sitter's personality into the archetype being presented. These works seek to increase the number of paintings which exist that are made in consideration of the female mythos, body, and the being within.

This awareness extends into my glassworks as well. Which can be a bit tricky. How does one make an object for the body, of the body, literally "object-ify-ing" the figure, while remaining true to the spirit of autonomy? In exploration of non-traditional presentations of form; relishing in the asymmetry of shapes, sizes, and aspects.

I can no longer create without questioning. It is my desire to offer something more, that challenges our notions of identity and autonomy. To expand our capacities for recognizing and associating being with body. I am very grateful to be able to share these works with the world. Thank you for recognizing their rarity, and for receiving them.
