About

DESING BY CHIARA

I like creative design in many forms.

My background is in architecture, and I worked in architecture and interior design for many years.

All my life I have been exploring and producing work in different areas: carpet design, art & photography and, more recently, wearable art.

ACCESSORIES: Wearable Art.
My wearable pieces are shawls, scarves, bow ties and ascots.
Each piece is hand made and one-of-a-kind. I also design my own
fabric that I use for the bow ties and some of the scarves and shawls.

I like very much to be directly involved in the whole creation process, from the idea to the design and to the actual making of the final product. That is only possible in small objects.

CARPET & FABRIC DESIGN;
I grew up in Italy in an artistic environment that contributed to my interest in art and design at an early age.
After my degree in architecture I moved to the USA where I worked in architecture and interior design for many years.

While working in architecture and interior design I was involved in projects requiring custom furniture and custom carpet design. This lead me to license designs to fabric and carpet manufacturers in US and Italy, including Schumacher, Maya Carpet, Thai Dynasty, Asmara, Tisca Italia, and Dedar.

ART
Since childhood “making art” has been a serene pastime and a joyous escape
for me. My first lessons in pastel drawing and oil painting were from my mother, the painter Nennele Formica and in sculpture from my aunt, the sculptress Claudia Formica.

Later I studied etching in Torino, under the direction of Romano
Campagnoli, and ceramics and woodworking in Arcosanti, Arizona.
I have attended many classes at RISD over my years in Rhode Island.
I particularly enjoy drawing and painting, experimenting with different
media and techniques in two and three-dimensional work.
The constant in this variety of techniques is a theme of mostly architectural
inspiration.
My art pieces have been exhibited in Arizona and in Providence, RI.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Learning to take good pictures was always an integral part in my work as an architect and interior designer. I was interested in photography since my father gave me my first camera when I was ten years old.
My favorites subjects are buildings, architecture old and new, but also nature, landscape, flowers.
My photographs are available in many size prints and in note card collections.
