Offering Beautiful Wool Fabric for Rug Hooking, Applique, Quilting, Sewing and Crafting. Original primitive rug hooking patterns by Mary Johnson.
All hand dyed and mill dyed wool selections are all 100% wool fabrics from top US distributors. I wash and dry each piece with care and attention to make if perfectly ready for crafting with wool.
I have been dyeing wool and designing patterns for primitive rug hooking since I started hooking in 1998. My pattern designs are greatly influenced by my love for folk art and simple geometric lines. Many of the designs are inspired by antique rugs and stories of the early days of rug hooking.
A bit of whimsy with a lack of perspective fits right in with my fondness for "doodling" which I've been enjoying since I was a young girl.

Dyeing wool is a passion of mine! A perfect day for me starts with mixing up a dye recipe, then watching the wool as it takes up the dye and changes into a new beautiful unique piece. Check back often for hand dyed wool listings as they quickly disappear :)

I'm glad you are here. Peruse the wool fabrics and primitive patterns, many of which are suitable for beginners. I also offer backing fabrics for drawing up your own designs, and primitive rug hooks.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. I will be happy to help you with special orders.

International customers are welcome to contact me for a shipping quote.
Thank you for visiting!

About

For the Love of Rug Hooking

At a very young age my Mother taught me to sew. Grandma taught me to knit. From there I pursued all the wonderful textile crafts, never dreaming that some day I would be a primitive rug hooker, own a rug hooking business and teach others this wonderful old craft. But sometimes our lives take serendipitous turns.

In 1998 I was a quilter and loved making quilts, especially scrap quilts. That year, my sister talked me into trying my hand at rug hooking and I was hooked from the first moment!
I started my business in 2003 by teaching classes and selling hand dyed wool. In 2009 I added Designs In Wool website and in 2011 opened my Etsy shop.

During these years my husband and I have moved from Illinois to Minnesota and now live in California where I work out of our cabin/studio in the Sierra Nevada Mountains enjoying the serene beauty of pine forest and mountain views.

What I love most about primitive rug hooking is how naive and whimsical it is. A very old art form that evolved out of the utilitarian need to have warm coverings, whether for floor or bed. The materials were old textiles the maker had on hand. The art work and themes came from their surroundings, drawn as best they could.

My hope is that you will join me in this adventure, to keep the craft of rug hooking alive and well and growing into the next generations.

I'm so glad you have come to visit. I hope I can be of help in providing the supplies and designs you need to start pulling loops :)
