About

I fell in love with Japanese paper

Established 2011.

I fell in love with Japanese paper and wanted to create products that would respect the wonderful qualities of traditionally made decorative papers as well as honor contemporary living. I began making basic lamps and shades at home over ten years ago. Back then there we were just beginning to see the appearance of handmade papers from India and Nepal in the UK and stepping up our interest in fair trade, craft and the eco qualities of papers made in Asia. The papers were crude but beautiful, incorporating plant fibers and a new interest in the traditional craft of papermaking.

Ten years on and I have now discovered a wealth of papers made and printed by craftspeople in Japan, France, India and Nepal. Some of them were originally used by bookbinders as end papers, others for origami and often as simple home decoration. As the cultures from which they originated develop, the papers, the craft and the art are being lost, they don’t want their “old fashioned” papers anymore! Every artisan product needs an audience for its survival and every tradition needs protecting. These papers are so beautiful I just couldn’t resist trying to use them in a more contemporary way and help ensure their survival.

There is somewhat of a renaissance in decorating our homes with pattern & colour as well as a growing community of both makers and customers turning to traditional arts/crafts and home-made products rather than mass produced. There is a growing discernment in the things we are buying and having around us.

Pattern design has a long and interesting history, through ancient and modern times, Intrinsically linked to architecture, lifestyle and art of the time, pattern designers of note can evoke a sense of place, personality, culture and expression through the colours, textures and shapes they use. I firmly believe in the value of aesthetics in our culture and in some small way bringing pattern and colour from across the globe into peoples homes via basic products such as the humble lampshade I hope to promote, inspire and enliven people’s value in art and design.

I have chosen to use paper from around the world that draw on their own cultural and historical roots, they all have something extra special about them. Whether it be the heritage of the pattern, the skill needed to print it, the plant based dyes or the patience and wisdom needed to produce the hand made paper itself. Many are hand printed using traditional techniques that have been used for centuries.

These papers mix the old with the new and retain tradition, craft and design skills at their essence. There is a history and a story behind each piece of paper and a journey that has taken some considerable time. Surely there is a place for history and tradition? Perhaps with a need to revitalise and help sustain but we can bring the simple and valuable discoveries that have come before us into our future without destroying the past.

Welcome

All the shades are hand covered by myself in my Brighton studio. Due to the nature of hand printed and hand made papers, their may be slight imperfections in the print and paper itself and colours may vary slightly. This is natural and part of the process and charm of a hand crafted product.

Many of the papers patterns alter slightly when the light is switched on, particularly patterns using gold print, the gold often “disappears” giving a more subtle pattern.

I aim to work with each particular paper I use, according to its design, size and quality to create a unique product, so please do not expect perfection in the purest sense of the word. All processes and materials are of high quality.

I provide information on the papers production and print processes whenever I can, the majority are made using sustainable methods.

I try and use recycled and biodegradable packaging wherever possible.

Safety & Care Advice

* The shades are designed to fit pendant, table and standard lamp bases with a maximum 40 watt bulb for shades less than 25cm diameter and 60 watt bulb for larger shades. Low energy bulbs are recommended for all shades as they use low energy and are cool to the touch.

* Shades come complete with converter plug for European fittings. The lampshade rings are Epoxy coated/painted white which prevents rust. Please note that light fittings are not included. BC Fitting (29mm) - required for (UK) ceiling pendants and British lamps. ES Fitting (40mm) - required for European lamps

* Shades are made using strong PVC engineered for lampshade making; the material is flame retardant and adheres to Lighting Association standards.

* Clean lampshades regularly by lightly dusting with a vacuum cleaner or feather duster. Remove marks with an India rubber, do not wash with water or any wet solution. There are no protective coatings used on the paper so although they are strong & durable please treat with care.
