About

Designs by Baerreis is the selling venue for the work of four independent artists who happen to be family.

Our new showroom - Gallery 26 in Murphy is now open for several months!

Phil and Martha collaborate on the design and execution of their beautiful sculptural containers, kitchen ware, puzzles and hair accessories.. Working since 1972 they are grateful for the opportunity to continue to design and create new work.

Elisabeth works in metals and glass - creating beautiful fused glass jewelry as well as doing textile design and painting.. Her cloisonne' and enamel work are gorgeous.

Nathan is a painter, poet and photographer.. He finds beauty in the oddest places and makes pendants with his images that are close to the heart..

We do repeat designs and one of a kind pieces in wood, glass, metal, textiles, photography, oils, watercolor and print..

We make band saw boxes, puzzle boxes, fused glass jewelry, art cards, photographic prints, hair forks and sticks, wood spoons and hand hewn bowls.. pocket and lipstick mirrors, buttons and pins and magnets.. all from our original art photos or paintings or drawings... We knit, crochet and sometimes work in clay.

We believe in freedom and we believe in the power of kindness, love and mutual respect and consideration.

The things we have in common and share are a love for nature and all things living. We love the process and take pride in each item we make. We are individuals and have strong opinions. We don't do trendy. We sign our work and take responsibility for it. We also take responsibility for our choices in life. We are not neat. We love to read. We cook from scratch and eat little or no meat.. We care intensely about the world and the people in it. We expect no special treatment, yet we know we are a little different. We also know we are not that different from indigenous artisans working long hours on dirt floors doing hand work. Work is our friend - and we are grateful that we can do it.

Our lives are full of creativity, pets, dust, books, projects, papers, doodles, lists of things to do and things we will never get around to doing.

Life is Good!

It has links to the values thresholds for taxes, but this is more a practical explanation of where is my parcel and how do I get it?

Basics
VAT is charged at 20% on values over £15, this includes item price, shipping and insurance - all are calculated as a total
The threshold for customs fees is £135 which are then charged at 2.5%
Some items are exempt
There's a Rital Mail admin fee charge of £8 fir them to collect the customs fees on behalf of Her Najesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC)

It is vital in my opinion if you are selling from a non EU country into the UK that you contact the buyer after they have placed their order, and explain all of this to them. Including that where it says VAT included where applicable next to prices this does not apply to non EU sellers
They may want to cancel their order, but better than it being shipped, them refusing the fees , the parcel being held for 21 days and THEN being returned to you
Not everyone knows points this upfront and it can come as a nasty shock, and often it gets taken out unfairly on the seller

Just as a guide I had a parcel recently from US - I knew this before I ordered!
value of goods were $250, postage $63.45 (gulp!) and I had to pay
£38.91 VAT
£4.75 import duty
£8.00 handling fee
Total £51.66
Next time I'm flying to US and buying in person.......

FAQS - just a few highlights of points that come up
Q.I'm being charged customs charges I expect you to pay them
A Seller isn't responsible for import fees in foreign countries, they are the buyers responsibility (make sure you have this in your policies)

Q But it says VAT is included where applicable next to your prices?
A This is a blanket statement added by Etsy and doesn't apply to non EU sellers, hence 'where applicable 'refers to country location of seller rather than the transaction itself. It would be illegal for a non EU seller to collect such taxes

Q Will you mark the selling price as lower to help me avoid fees?
A. No as a seller you cannot put a lower value on the customs form , not only is it illegal, but if the parcel goes missing then your insurance doesn't cover the true amount

Q Can you please mark it as a gift as I have bought it for my friends birthday?
A No the gift is between buyer and friend, not seller and buyer

Q I haven't had to pay duty before why now?
A All parcels with these values have always been liable for duty but it may be that some were just picked up in spot checks, but it would appear that more comprehensive checks are being carried out now and more parcels caught in the net

Q. I've not had my parcel but it shows on the tracking it's been delivered?
A Royal Mail mark the parcel as being delivered but it is likely that it is being held at the local postal depot. You should have had a grey card delivered (like the more usual red card) with instructions If not contact the local postal depot

Q How do I pay these fees?
A either in person or online

Q, what happens if I refuse to pay the customs fees
A the parcel will be returned to the sender after 21 days

Hope this helps !
