Domestic Papers ~ Homemade Books... with a Past!

Houston, Texas | 1,362 Sales

Announcement    2020 being such an odd and unpredictable year, you may want to make a note of it!
Or even write an entire mystery novel about it- for who knows what will happen next? I can help you get started... Domestic Papers mixes my lifelong love of books, maps, paper, and antique ephemera into a modern 'mash-up' of Vintage Vibe handmade books I'm thrilled to share with you!

My shop is called Domestic Papers because I am a homebody artist in an explorer's body. I love to travel but even more, I love to be at home.

I find bookbinding endlessly fascinating because every one-of-a-kind book I make in my East End Houston studio can be traced back to books made centuries ago in far away lands.

As you browse my shop, you'll see that many of my books have a history all their own thanks, in part, to the old and interesting photos, postcards, maps, book illustrations, and general miscellany I collect when I'm away from home.

Select a book from Domestic Papers and you'll continue the tale that I've begun. The rest of the story is up to you!
Smiles and miles,
Lee

About DomesticPapers

Sales 1,362

The Past makes a great Present!

Even as a kid, I collected old stuff. All my family did! It must be something in our blood that warms us to old, dusty, forgotten objects with the immediate thought of "I can do something with that!"

It helps tremendously that we also grew up with 'busy hands.' Always making something. Which is great because all those dusty treasures can pile up and what fun is it to keep them hidden away?

Domestic Papers combines my desire to share my vintage images and items with my love of making something new to create modern, useful books you'd be happy to use yourself or proud to give as a gift.

From the first thrill of discovering discarded pages to the satisfaction of carefully wrapping a handmade book for shipping, I find every step in my creative process to be fascinating and joyful.

So many steps are involved in bookbinding- designing a format, selecting materials, cutting, folding, gluing, sewing... and I use all archival materials so that the "homemade books...with a past" that I create today will last well into the future.

Everyday, I can't wait to dig into my treasure trove of vintage maps, postcards, and ephemera and make something new. So tell me... what new/old book can I make for you?

My books have a Vintage Vibe, due no doubt to my family of DIYers and pickers always on the lookout for leftover inspiration. I love to mix old images, today's papers, and ancient bookbinding techniques to make something both timeless and useful now.
