About

Country Girl in the Big City

It's morning time, there's a soft silence echoing through out the house. The hubby has just left for work. It's time for me to get my coffee and to sit down and get the business side of things taken care of. A couple listings, emails, updates, have to make sure to make out the list if there is supply gathering to be done.

But before the work begins I slowly sip that first cup of coffee and I think back to this bright eyed little 10 year old first learning to crochet. A cousin of mine taught me how to make a baby blanket and the first stitch I learned was a half double crochet. I can remember thinking I'd never get the hang of it. I wish I could go back and tell that little girl- "just wait, one day you'll be making stitches and using patterns you never thought possible. Hang in there and you'll get it. " I kept up with it, I found even between the frustrations of learning, a sort of peace I'd never felt while doing any other activity.

As I picked up more crocheting skills, I also started venturing into jewelry making and years later it's a close tie between the two as to which one I prefer. I'm not sure I'll ever have a true favorite as I can't imagine leaving one behind for the other.

Several of my closest friends throughout the years have often asked me why I didn't have my items for sale. I can't say I always had the best answer but a part of it was just lack of wanting to charge for my items. I loved giving them away and seeing people's face light up when they received a handmade item as a gift. Slowly I warmed up to the idea though.

Thus, Dot Nik's was born. There's no real magic behind the name really, it is Dot for Dorothy, the first name I share with my grandmother, and Nik short for Nicole.

I have had a passion for creating since I was a small child. I learned to crochet when I was 10 and picked up jewelry making along the way. It brings me great pleasure to take materials and turn them into a finished product to share with others.

Welcome to my little shop! I hope you find something you like here.

I have a passion for creating jewelry, my crocheted items and screen printing/vinyl graphics.

I have been crocheting for 18 years and making jewelry of various types for almost as long. My husband and I have a screen printing and vinyl graphics business and sometimes when we have a lull in business I like to get creative with the various mediums I have available to me because of the trade. I had thought for a long while about opening an etsy shop, I just couldn't make my mind up as to which medium I wanted to focus on. Then one day the light bulb came on! In that moment I realized I didn't have to focus on just one of my passions. I could gear my shop to showcase all of them. Shortly after Dot Nik's Nikki Knacks was born!

I have a couple of friends that have asked me if I will list their items as well. I will always clearly mark their items as theirs. Doug is the main one that I add things to, his items will always be in the shop section called Doug's Corner.

We all enjoy bringing our own individual styles to our creations.
