About

A little bit about me

Ceramics hooked me 20 years ago the first time I sat at a wheel. I fell in love with clay and everything about making pottery. Trusting to serendipity and the encouragement of my wife, I left a career teaching science and enrolled in a 2-year professional crafts program. After graduation we found a rambling old house in the country with a huge four-car garage. Here I built my home studio and have never looked back.

I savor this creative life as I shepherd my pieces from throwing, to trimming, to firing, to glazing and to firing again. I still get a kick from starting my day wrapping up pots to ship out to a far-flung Etsy audience. The hours will always be long and tiring but it is time spent joyfully absorbed in the moment! After all these years I still sometimes catch myself feeling glum on a Sunday evening but then I suddenly remember "Oh yeah! I get to go to the studio and make some pottery in the morning!" I feel so lucky to have found what I was meant for.

Everything in my shop was created by me on my pottery wheel here in the mountains of western North Carolina near Asheville. I take pleasure in bringing clay and color together to create useful, beautiful things for you to enjoy every day for a lifetime. My shop philosophy is simple: offer quality, functional handmade pottery with outstanding customer service.

Frequently asked questions
Gift Wrapping Option

I use a sturdy white paper (recycled!) that I personalize with hand-stamps and finish with a bow and a gift card with your message. I don't include pricing and I will confirm that I prepared your selection as a gift when I ship it.

Care Instructions

My glazes are food-safe and may be used in the microwave, dishwasher, freezer and oven. For oven use, place the pottery into a cold oven that has not been preheated. You want to prevent a quick temperature change. The kind of clay I use is called "stoneware" and is robust enough for everyday use. It is pure white in color on the bottom. Feel free to set it in a shallow dish of dilute bleach if the color ever needs to be rejuvenated.

Packaging and Breakage

I securely wrap my pottery in layers of cardboard then nestle it with packing peanuts inside a corrugated shipping box. However, if your pottery gets damaged during shipment within the US don't worry. Just send me a photo within a week of its arrival and I will immediately send you a replacement.

Custom and Personalized Orders

Running a one-person studio doesn't allow me much time to take on special orders but I'm always willing to hear what you have in mind.

The Nature of Handmade

Each piece is handmade on the wheel and just a little bit different but I work hard to make sure the piece you receive matches your expectations. I stand behind my work. If you're not happy, neither am I!

Shipping

I try to get your selections into your hands ASAP! Your purchase will almost always ship the next business day. Although domestic Priority Mail is not guaranteed at 2 to 3 days, it's pretty reliable.
