Announcement
Welcome to my shop! I'm Beth, the artist and owner of Beth Whitney Studio (formerly known as Downeast Watercolors). I'm best known for my vibrant, realistic Maine watercolor landscape paintings. Inspiration comes from backroads and trails, especially along the coast. My favorite subjects are Acadia National Park, Blue Hill, Camden, midcoast land trusts and preserves, and lighthouses. I also paint the occasional flower and bird. All art is handmade here in my Westbrook, Maine studio.
I invite you to explore each category and see how many places you recognize from your own travels. It's easy to refresh your coastal home decor with an original watercolor painting or giclee print. Prints are ready to slip into standard sized frames that you can find anywhere. Upgrade your look with an archival white mat for 8x10" or 11x14" prints. Many of the originals here include double white mats and are easy to frame. Larger paintings are available through my website. Enjoy!
Please reach out if you have any questions or comments. I'd love to hear from you!

5 out of 5 starsThis is such a gorgeous and mesmerizing painting! I love it for it's clever perspective, dynamic composition and for the way it evokes a zen-like calm every time you view it. There is a magic in the way Beth paints. Everything bursts with life even though it's on paper. You can almost see the clouds drifting across the sky, the water rippling and the gem bright lupine bursting up in the foreground. I first purchased Beth's Yellow House (which I absolutely adore) and was so impressed I had to have Deer Isle Lupine as well. That is the only problem - I am putting too many of her paintings in my cart! If you think they look beautiful online it is impossible to articulate how exquisite they are in person.

5 out of 5 starsThis is such an incredibly beautiful painting! I absolutely adore it. Beth is an immensely talented artist and this Yellow House is probably the most cheerful painting I own. Beth paints everything - the blades of grass, the frothy Lupine, the small boats in the distance with such extraordinary precision and finesse. I especially love the brilliant sunlight and every time I look at this gorgeous work I feel as though I can step right out onto the sun drenched grass and head down to the glittering water. My husband didn't know I ordered this painting and when it came he was also enraptured by it and he tried to steal it and take it into his den! Beth is such a pleasure to work with - so courteous and helpful. ! I just ordered her Deer Isle Lupine and it's just as stunning as this one. We will definitely be back for more!

5 out of 5 starsBeth’s painting is beautiful. I had purchased an Anne Kilham print years ago and I was looking for a similar style Maine print to go with it. Beth’s work is beautiful and such a wonderful companion for the one I had. Her colors are perfect and you feel like you’re right there in Maine. I will definitely be buying more works from her as soon as I find more wall space! And she’s so lovely!

5 out of 5 starsGorgeous, high-quality prints, and they shipped so quickly! I'm extremely happy with the three I picked out, and seeing them framed, they look like originals. Excuse the sloppy frame arrangement in my photo - it's a temporary set up.

Frequently asked questions
What is a giclee print?
Giclee prints use high-resolution digital scans and special pigment-based inks to create incredibly detailed reproductions. My paper is 100% cotton rag, which really shows off the colors. The colors are crisp, vibrant, and perfectly mirror those of the original paintings. Because I do my own printing, I'm able to ensure the accuracy of each reproduction.
Framing & Displaying
I use standard sized mats on original paintings and mini/small prints. This makes it easy to purchase a frame off the shelf. If you'd like to get creative, I recommend heading to your local framer for expert advice and a vast selection of styles and colors. I recommend using UV glazing for original watercolors, which will help protect your art from the sun's damaging light.
For prints, it's a matter of buying a frame, washing the glass, and slipping into the frame. Mats do look a little more polished, especially if you're gifting the piece of art.
Whether you use UV glass or not, all art should be displayed away from direct or very bright light to avoid fading.
Painting Commissions
While I generally don't accept painting commissions, I gladly welcome suggestions for places you'd like to see me paint.
Color Variations
I do all of my painting, scanning, and printing right here in my studio. I'm particular about the prints matching the original watercolors. In fact, I work at it until I can't tell the difference unless I'm handling the paper. The images you see online are the same files that I actually print. The smaller the image, the sharper it appears in person and online.
Colors vary widely from device to device. I use a calibrated Mac for all of my digital work. The images I see on the screen match what comes out of the printer. However, I notice that colors on my Samsung phone are more muted, while my Samsung tablet is pretty close to the Mac.
Digital Downloads, Licensing, Wedding Invitations, etc.
My artwork is available as original watercolors and giclee prints. I don't offer digital downloads, licensing, or other uses of my art because I can't control the quality of the final product. It's really that simple. It's important that any reproductions maintain the integrity of the original art.
Should I buy an original or a print?
Original paintings require more of a financial investment up front, but they also appreciate more in value over time. There's also a satisfaction in knowing you have the only original painting. Giclees are more affordable and look exactly like the original paintings, so they are a great option for many.
While many of my collectors only purchase original art, others like to mix it up with both originals and giclees. It really depends on your budget and philosophy as a collector. If you're just looking for some pretty paintings to add color or to give as a gift, giclees are a perfect choice.
Please note that I have more original watercolors on my website.
