Downeast Watercolors features original paintings of Maine by Beth Whitney

Downeast Watercolors began in 1999, when I worked in Bar Harbor and wanted to find a creative outlet. My desk at work had a spectacular view over Frenchman's Bay with Egg Rock Light, Mark Island Light, and Schoodic beyond. Early morning was the best because you could see the sun glinting on both lighthouses at the same time. I even kept binoculars in my drawer! After work, I headed to Little Long Pond or Acadia National Park for hiking inspiration, took a few pictures, and went home to paint.

Over the years, my watercolors have been exhibited through several galleries, numerous juried outdoor art shows, and solo exhibitions. Today, my paintings are available exclusively through the web, accessible to everyone to view and purchase regardless of where they live. Be sure to check out my painting archive on to see a sampling of pieces in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Each of my original watercolor paintings includes a classic double white conservation mat and FoamCor backing board, packaged in a clear sleeve. It's a cute package that makes a perfect gift. I use standard sized mats, so you can either buy the frame off the shelf or have your local framer offer expert advice and a vast selection of styles and colors. I recommend using UV glass or plexi for original watercolors, which will help protect your art from the sun's damaging light. I'm glad to give you ideas on sourcing glass and frames.

Watercolors should be displayed away from direct or very bright light or they will fade. The UV glass makes a tremendous difference, but I still would keep art away from windows.

Paintings are carefully wrapped in bubble wrap before being packed in a very sturdy box. I'm happy to include a personalized note for gifts, just send me the text and I'll put it on a pretty card.

The artist (me) retains the copyright for all works of art, and this is not transferred at the point of sale. Images on this site and paintings/prints you purchased may not be reproduced in any way. So don't print them to make cards or to frame.

Watercolors are notoriously difficult to photograph and present digitally. Keep in mind that monitor resolutions greatly vary screen to screen, so colors may look brighter on some monitors than others. My paintings have natural colors as you would see in real life, so any wonky color casts are entirely due to the camera. The original painting always looks so much better than the photos online.

Frequently asked questions

What is a giclee print?

Giclee prints are the gold standard for fine art reproductions. Rather than using plates as with lithographs, they use high-resolution digital scans and special archival inks to create incredibly detailed reproductions that look just like the original art. I have just started making giclees of my watercolors, and they match the original paintings perfectly.
