Something may be quite beautiful and full of potential, but when it grows from within you it tears you apart. In the late fall of 2017 a seed of inspiration was planted amongst my roots. I did know its potential then, but I was not prepared for the great pain and unprecedented fertility of mind and spirit accompanying it. This seed grew, for I was fertile. It stole nutrients and water from the soil beneath me; stems wound around and bound the delicate support system I cultivated, leaving scars. It caused me great misery, for as long as it was hidden inside of me, it it split me in two, but this opening was essential in revealing my true potential. In my suffering I have lost parts of myself, parts of my own visual language, my support, and inspiration, but what has grown in its place has intertwined with what already existed. I realized my interconnection with the seed, it’s growth was my own, all the pain was potential waiting to erupt from me. My fertility as an artist is my ability to recognize pain as opportunity to grow.
