About

Nature Brought Out The Best In Me - Inner Crafter Unleashed

What Drifty Gems is for Me:

Drifty Gems was started much like all of the other ambitious ideas I have that tend to be just that... ideas. I have so many interests and want to experience so many things I tend to not have the time to follow through with all of them. I have been working at and enhancing my social work career over the years but there has always been a part of me that thrives on being crafty; with the stresses of the job crafting is my solitude where my imagination can go where it needs to and the process becomes a form of relaxation.

The Idea:

My idea for Drifty Gems was sparked by a desire to have a jewelry hanger that would hold multiple bracelets and necklaces. After scouring the internet and not coming up with a solution I realized I would have to make something myself. Being surrounded by the ocean in the small Province of Nova Scotia I thought what better material to make it out of than driftwood; there was an abundance, it was easy to find, and the pieces are one of a kind. I made my first driftwood jewelry hanger and it snowballed from there... I thought, "If I wanted a multi-use jewelry hanger I am sure there are others that do too". I came across Etsy while using "StubleUpon" and decided this is where I would market my driftwood pieces. The first person I told about my shop idea was my husband... he laughed thinking it was another one of my outlandish ideas that would never make it. Real supportive eh! Well I am the one laughing now because I followed through and my shop has expanded to home decor pieces, driftwood signs, wedding items, and lots of custom orders.

The Process:

Step 1: The hunt for driftwood pieces. I mainly go on my driftwood hunt in Scott's Bay, Nova Scotia but whenever I am on a beach or the coast of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, or Prince Edward Island I always find the time for a driftwood hunt. Typically my husband and I go and we bring our two Shih Tzus along for the walk but there have been times I have employed friends to come along for the fun.

Step 2: The drying and sanitizing process. All of my pieces have spent a lot of time in the ocean which in itself sanitizes with it's strong salt content but when I bring my pieces home I inspect them for any bug infestations, clean them off and cure them with the heat of the sun.

Step 3: Use my imagination. Each piece is unique and has a purpose, I scan my driftwood collection and something will stand out to me about a piece helping me to decide what it will be used for such as a jewelry hanger, towel rack, wedding sign, or piece to a wind chime. I have even on occasion found pieces for my Angel Wing, an Sea Creature Collections.

Step 4: Make it into what it was intended for. Depending on the piece there are various steps involved in making a piece into it's final product however most involve some degree of sanding, cleaning, drilling, nailing, screwing, painting, spraying, and sometimes gluing.

Step 5: The sell. So after a piece has been completed I take it outside and do a mini photoshoot in the woods to show off it's features and the final look. I post the pictures and list the item and that's where you come in as the buyer...

Step 6: The purchase. Once an item is purchased I package it up with as much re-used packaging as I can to cut down on waste and work in an environmentally-friendly way. I take the package to the Post Office and away it goes!
