Wonderful transaction! Ordered on Monday, received by Thursday. I was even refunded a shipping overage, which is just above and beyond. Can't wait to use these shoes for my Poison Ivy costume. Thanks again!

An Interview With Myself
Recently I sat down with Karen Jo, owner of Duncan Loves Tess Vintage & Retro.
Q. Is Karen Jo your real name?
A. Yes it is! But just call me Karen.
Q. When were you first exposed to vintage clothing?
A. Well, it wasn't considered vintage at the time, but I use to play dress-up in my mother's formal dresses from the 50s. She had the most amazing gowns and a lot of them, I guess she was popular. My girlfriends and I spent countless hours of fantasy play in those dresses. We were little tomboys so those dresses were played in outside as well. Unfortunately, most were destroyed.
Q. When did you start wearing vintage?
A. In college, doesn't everybody? I was always interested in clothing and fashion but when I started college I couldn't justify spending my money on new clothes. I started shopping at thrift stores, which were a rarity in those days. This was the late 70s, so my mother's generation was donating their clothing. They were also donating their own mother's clothing. My best items were purchased in the 70s & 80s.
Q. Of the vintage pieces you own, what is your favorite?
A. Technically, I own all the vintage I sell. I purchase my vintage outright for DLT. However, the two pieces I will never part with are my Grandmother's lace party dress, and my Elsa Schiaparelli Persian lamb coat.
Q. Do you wear vintage now?
A. Daily? No. DLT is a home based business and my daily lifestyle isn't a good fit for vintage clothing. I'm a jeans and T-shirt kinda gal. I do wear vintage when I have a reason to dress up. Wait, I'll take that back, I do wear vintage jewelry daily and my vintage Louis Vuitton bucket is my go-to handbag.
Q. What is your favorite period?
A. I love the 50s. I love the glamour, the exquisite detailing and craftsmanship in the clothing, jewelry, and handbags! Maybe it reminds me of my mother. Ironically, 50s dresses don't look good on me.
Q. Do you sew?
A. Yes, I use to make most of my daughter's clothing. Now I just do minor repairs if needed. Major repairs are sent to a professional. Knowing the basics of sewing, design, and construction, is a plus in this business.
Q. You have children?
A. Three, but if you ask me their ages I'll plead the fifth. Let's just say they can afford to buy their own vintage clothing. I also have two Golden Retrievers, Duke & Fiona, and a cat, Dexter.
Q. Are you on social media?
A. Of course! I love Instagram! If you follow me there you will get a glimpse of my personal interests along with shop updates and sale information (warning, I'm active on IG). I'm also on Pinterest, Wanelo, Tumblr, Twitter, Polyvore, Facebook and have a blog, www.Duncanlovestess.com.
Q. Speaking of personal interests, many vintage sellers also collect. Do you collect anything in particular?
A. Funny you should ask, my girlfriend who is a self proclaimed minimalist calls me an organized hoarder. I prefer to think of myself as a collector. I collect vintage alligator and crocodile handbags, vintage Coach and Dooney & Bourke handbags, and vintage charm bracelets.
Q. How did you come up with your shop's name?
A. Duncan Loves Tess is named after the first two dogs my husband and I owned together. Tess was a beautiful golden retriever we rescued and Duncan was a chocolate lab we purchased as a puppy. As older dogs will do, Tess really raised Duncan and he just loved her to pieces! They are long gone now but I think of them every day when I open my shop.
Q. Speaking of opening your shop, what are the hours for DLT?
A. Actually when I spoke of opening my shop, I really meant turning on my computer. As an online business DLT is open 24/7. I am always available to answer questions. I do sleep however, so if you contact me after 9pm EST I may not get back to you untill the morning.
Q. One last question, I notice you have a motto "Vintage is a state of mind - wear old, live young". Where did that come from?
A. Years ago I started following a little blog called "Advanced Style". Many things impressed me about the blog but one thing in particular stood out, the ladies of Advanced Style are not afraid to wear vintage - their own or newly purchased pieces. I think many women "of a certain age" are hesitant to wear vintage for fear they may look dated. I want to dispel the myth that vintage is just for young women. I know a lot of younger women choose to dress from head to toe in period outfits and they look great! I'm not suggesting an older women do that, but incorporating a vintage piece into an outfit is a way to have some fun and show a little personality. And having fun is a good way to stay young!

Additional policies and FAQs
Vintage according to Etsy is 20 years or older. Antique is typically considered 100 years or older. We attempt to date our items within a 10 year period. If we don't know the actual date an item was made, we base our timeline on style, materials, and manufacturer. Since most of the items we sell are related to fashion, the dates given are for general knowledge only. Mistakes do happen, so please be an informed consumer and contact us if you have any questions.
Our items will ship in good clean condition. This means, all items that can be machine or hand washed have been. Dry cleaning is handled on a case by case basis. Some garments require it, others come to us in clean condition with the dry cleaning tags attached. We only dry clean those that we feel need to be cleaned. We do not own a retail shop or do shows, so once an item has been photographed and listed it is set aside for sale. Please be aware that when you buy vintage clothing extra care may be required when it comes to cleaning. We attempt to avoid selling items that smell musty or of smoke. However, if we decide to put up for sale a item in such condition (usually its a highly desirable or collectible item) we will note the odor in our listing, We do not polish handbags, shoes, and jewelry.
Some wool garments are stored with lavender and may require airing prior to wear.
Vintage fabric tends not to give and can be fragile, so please allow a few inches for wiggle room. Colors vary according to computer monitors. We note if the garment has been pinned on the model or form.
All measurements are provided in inches. For your convenience here is a link to an easy conversion calculator: http://www.calculator.net/conversion-calculator.htm

Frequently asked questions
How we measure clothing
Measurements are provided in inches and all measurements are approximate. Clothing is measured on a flat surface with a flexible dressmakers tape and measurements for chest, waist, hips should be doubled. We also provide the dress form measurement as a basis for seeing how the garment fits.
Length - Shoulder to hem
Length waist - Shoulder to defined waist
Bust/chest - Underarm to underarm (need to double)
Waist - Width at natural waist (need to double)
Hips - 5-6" below natural waist (need to double)
Sleeve length - Shoulder seam to bottom of sleeve
Back - Shoulder seam to shoulder seam
Halter Back - Under arm to under arm
How we measure shoes
Using a flexible dressmaker tape:
Insole: place tip of tape measure at toe, follow the footbed to the heel (interior)
Sole: toe to edge of heel (exterior)
Ball: 3" from tip of toe, measure width of sole (exterior)
Heel: measure the heel only (exterior)
How we define condition
We rarely describe an item as being in "mint" or "excellent" condition. Our belief is that a garment 20-100 years old probably has a flaw or two we did not catch. Most of the Items we sell are in "good" to "very good" condition, meaning there is light wear suitable for the garment's age, but has no holes, tears, rips, or stains unless noted. We avoid selling items in poor condition unless there is something really unique about the garment or it is being sold as "distressed" for fashion or for re-use.

Will you combine shipping?
Yes!! We are currently converting our items to the new Etsy shipping calculator which should give you a more accurate shipping rate on one item. However we are a bit uncertain how a second item is factored into the shipping costs under the calculator. Since we ship by weight, any overages will be refunded via the method you paid.
