About

Wearable Art from Brooklyn, NY

I've loved making things my entire life. Jewelry and sculpture, clothes and costumes, painting and calligraphy. In college I worked part-time making costumes for theatre and dance productions. Afterwards, I continued to work on art projects in my spare time, and began studying Japanese calligraphy and watercolor techniques.

I began to experiment with combining these new skills with my old love of fashion design, and so Dyer & Sparks was born! Hand-painted, totally unique clothing and accessories. Wearable art.

It's a multi-step process: fabric is pre-treated to better take the dyes, then stretched on a frame. Resists or stop-flow are applied as needed, and the piece is painted, dried, ironed to set the dye permanently, washed, dried and ironed. Then it's ready to be sewn into scarves, pocket squares, blouses...

I love the unpredictability of it. When free-hand painting with dyes, you can never entirely anticipate when a color will separate, when it will bleed unevenly or pool or blend. It makes each piece a reflection of a single moment in time; something that can never really be duplicated.

I grew up in 8 different cities across 4 different countries, but one constant is that I've always loved to craft. In addition to hand-painted textiles, I create custom clothing and costumes, Japanese calligraphy, and watercolors.
