Love this pad! It's just what I was looking for. Big, wide, plus size, and I now have super heavy periods since having baby #3. These have been great, especially overnight.

About

mothering inspired my business

I began hand crafting toys for my daughters over eleven years ago and I enjoy creating handcrafted toys made with natural materials. I love creating open ended toys that fill my children's time with creativity and allow them to immerse themselves in imaginary worlds. I want my children to have safe toys created with natural materials and use only those same high quality materials when constructing toys for others as well.

My inspiration and ideas come from all around me. One of my daughters might suggest an idea or I might see a wonderful illustration in one of the books we're reading. Sometimes I just look at the wool and see the object that it can become. Our daily life is filled with creative play, artistic expression, gardening, cooking, and lots of learning through living. I create toys made with wool that I source primarily from Wisconsin farmers. I buy raw fleece and then wash, card, and dye the wool myself. I also create toys made with 100% wool felt.

Our line of Retro Rags™ reusable cloth menstrual pads first began as pads that I designed and sewed for my own use. I began sewing these over a decade ago when I first learned about reusable "mama pads" via the Mothering dot commune discussion boards. I offered the plus size postpartum pads via the Mothering magazine discussion boards in craft swaps and they were so well received that I started a business selling them through my website retroragswi.com. After the birth of my second daughter I shut down the Retro Rags business and the website in order to spend more time with my daughters while they were young. I continued to sew pads for my own use and I continued to swap them. When I opened Earthy Mama Goods in 2011 here on Etsy I once again offered Retro Rags™ pads to the general public. My designs are the result of testing by hundreds of women of all sizes as well as my own personal preferences. All of my products are still sewn personally by me - Kari. If you're new to using cloth menstrual pads I recommend that your first purchase be the pad you think will work best for your heaviest days. If you're not sure which length and absorbency to choose, please write to me and we can discuss your needs and help you make the best choice for your body type, menstrual flow, and other unique attributes. My line of reusable cloth menstrual pads is primarily designed for plus size women (with the exception of the teen pads), so please carefully read the dimensions listed in the product listings to see if the size will work for you. They are wider and longer to provide better coverage for plus size women and work best for women who wear a size US 16 or larger. If you are a smaller woman, they can still provide great coverage, but you will find that they are wider than most other designs on the market.

Now all of our shop listings contain items that are in stock and ready to ship. If you see an active listing, that product is ready to ship to your home!

We've put together a list of the most frequently asked questions about Retro Rags™ reusable cloth menstrual pads and you can find them at the bottom of our shop policies page https://www.etsy.com/shop/EarthyMamaGoods#policies

Frequently asked questions

How many pads should I buy?

Every woman’s cycle is unique and the number of pads you would need depends upon the heaviness of your flow, how many days your period usually lasts, how frequently you plan to wash your pads, and whether you’re using only cloth pads or are combining them with the use of a menstrual cup. We do recommend changing your pads at least every four hours. So if you use that minimum (but some women will need to change them more frequently) and plan to wash pads every other day, you’d want a starting supply of 18-20 pads so that you could have some in the wash and still have pads left to wear. Remember that repeat customers receive a coupon code that provides a 10% discount on a purchase over $15.

Which type of pad is right for me?

10 inch teen pad. Sized for petite teens. Narrow pad measures 2.5 inches across at center. Ideal back-up for menstrual cup.

10 inch light/medium flow pad. For light or moderate flow days if your flow tends to stay in center of pad. Ideal back-up for menstrual cup. Sized for plus size women.

12 inch heavy flow pad. For heavy days. Some women with lighter flow use it for overnight. Sized for plus size women.

14 inch overnight/postpartum pad. For overnight & postpartum use. Sized for plus size women.

17 inch overnight/postpartum pad. Super absorbency & really long. Sized for plus size women.

How do I wear the pads?

The patterned flannel fabric is the top of the pad and is the part placed against your labia. The solid colored fleece fabric is the bottom of the pad and is placed against your panty. Snap the wings around the gusset of your panty to secure the pad to your panty. These pads work best when worn with close-fitting cotton panties. Panties made with nylon or silk are slicker and the fleece backing tends to slide and shift when cotton panties aren't used.

How often should I change the pads?

We do recommend that the longest you wait between changes is four hours to limit bacterial growth. You may find that your flow is heavier and you may prefer to change them more frequently. These pads will not be as absorbent as the disposable pads you've probably been using. There are no chemicals in them that gel up when liquids touch the chemicals. The pads I sew use natural fibers (cotton and hemp) to absorb liquid and use the PUL and polar fleece as barriers to prevent leaking.

How do I wash the pads?

General washing instructions:
Wash in hot water with a mild laundry detergent.
Machine dry on medium heat.
Do not dry on high heat.
Do not use fabric softeners – either liquid or sheets.
Do not bleach.

For best results either wash or rinse well within 24 hours of use.

Please wash & dry your Retro Rags™ cloth pads several times before using them for the first time. This will help plump up the fibers and make your pads more absorbent.

Why are your pads so thin?

I chose to use a hemp/cotton blend fleece in my soaker layer because it's a very absorbent fabric that is also thin and flexible. Hemp fabric is also known to be a less hospitable environment for bacteria than polyester and other synthetic fibers. I avoided choosing Zorb because Wazoodle Fabrics wouldn't let the consumer know what the fiber content was of this material and while I want a soaker layer that is absorbent I didn’t want to add unknown fibers to the pads. Zorb is also considerably thicker and stiffer than hemp/cotton fleece and I wanted a comfortable pad that conforms to my body shape. My design was created for my period, which is a heavy 7 day cycle with gushes and clots.

How long have you been in the business?

First, let me explain that I started sewing cloth pads for my own use about 11 years ago. Then I began offering them in craft swaps on the Mothering.com discussion boards. The mamas there loved them and they encouraged me to start a business. I did. It was called Retro Rags Wisconsin and I named my pad design Retro Rags™. I had my own website and ran a full-time business but shut the business down in 2009 to spend more time with my daughters while they were young. I decided to put my foot back into the water, so to speak, on a part-time basis in 2011 and opened a shop here on Etsy. Obviously the shop includes a wider product line and that's one reason I didn't resurrect the name Retro Rags Wisconsin.

Is my package insured?

U-Pic, Shipsurance, or USPS insurance is included with all purchases from our shop. We also provide tracking and delivery confirmation for all of our shipments shipped to US addresses. It's extremely rare that packages are lost or damaged, but if it would happen to your package simply assist us in completing the necessary claims paperwork and provide us with photographs of the damage and you will receive a refund.

Why can't I return or exchange the reusable cloth menstrual pads or postpartum pads?

Due to the very personal nature of cloth menstrual pads returns and exchanges are not possible. Please carefully read the detailed item listings prior to making a purchase decision.

If you have any questions please feel free to write to us before making your purchase and we can work with you to help you make an appropriate selection.
