Helping others in the Autism and Special Needs communities
Years ago, I was encouraged by my autistic child's teacher to create social stories for her. With a background in desktop publishing, graphic and web design,it was well within my abilities to do so. As tech-heads, we introduced our kids to computers early and they learned to read quickly on StarFall.com - and they enjoyed it, so it was natural for us to go this route.
Before long, I had a friend approach me to see if I could do a story for her family about flying in a plane for a vacation - and that is where the idea to share them came from. Some of my most popular stories came from requests - Let's Talk About Frustration remains my most popular title. As my daughter grows, so does the collection. I now offer more than 30 titles and I always have some in the works.
My stories are based on my child's communication style, in that she uses a number system (similar to numerology definitions - boy that took years to figure out!) to communicate, often times. We get a lot of 10 (I want what I want and nothing else matters) and 5 (change!) in our house when she is unhappy. I try to speak to each number on each page, because I think that is what will get through to her best. Here is the list:
1 - me (page 1 has an "I" statement)
2 - we (page 2 has a "we" statement)
3 - communication
4 - rules
5 - change
6 - community
7 - understanding (this is where the list of rules recap often goes)
8 - balance
9 - universal harmony
10 - me and nothing else
I don't stick to this in every story, but it is the framework from which i start. Each story is 10 pages long
When I started these, I did them for booklet printing - and we provide downloadable PDF files that open on every machine. By now so many schools and families use mobile devices that we mostly use the iPad versions that simulate an app or online book that is engaging for the kids. We still offer the printable versions - and you can save it to your file and print it again and again if needed. Great for parents and teachers.
Hello! I am a special needs mom who was encouraged to use my graphic design background to make social stories for my own child years ago. They were so helpful, I was inspired to share them with others.
Iris is a severely autistic, largely non-verbal child. She is my inspiration. She loves these stories. By now, she has only to see my logo to know that important info is on the way. She reads them to me, so I know the info went through her brain!
Many of our stories come from requests from viewers like you. I appreciate input and handle requests as time allows. I share every trick I have found on my Autism Journey on this site: www.EasyAutismSupportHelp.com Wishing you all the best xo!
As the mother of an autistic daughter, I have been inspired to create Easy Social Stories for her and to share them with others who can use them. Social Stories are great for all kinds of kids getting ready to go to the dentist or doctor for the first time - but they are particularly helpful for kids with autism, aspergers, down syndrome, ADD and ADHD. These stories attempt to help a child know what to expect in a new situation, thereby preparing them and helping them adapt more easily.
