About

Moorlands, Sea Glass and Hiraeth: An Illustrator’s Journey

Amalia was born in a land of misty mountains and magical lampposts and raised in a sundrenched province overflowing with poppy reds, ocean blues, and forest greens. Even before she could read, she was sketching and doodling on anything and everything. An early childhood spent moving around the world left her with a love for travel and an ever-present sense of wanderlust. As her artistic eye developed, Amalia discovered a passion for colors, cultural patterns, and organic designs.

Amalia spent four marvelous years in a cornfield studying illustration and design at one of the best art programs in the country. Her time in the Midwest brought Amalia’s passion for art to a new level and she graduated in 2009 with a will and a dream to illustrate children’s books. Pursuing her ideal career proved a challenging struggle, and her road to success took many detours. Along the way, her family and friends suggested selling her artwork on Etsy as an outlet for her artwork as well as a way to supplement her income. In 2012, after she found herself unemployed due to company cutbacks at her day job, Amalia decided to try a new adventure and opened her shop The Eclectic Illustrator. Here you will find high quality fine art prints of her original designs and illustrations as well as notecards and postcards showcasing her artwork.

Now Amalia spends her days sketching, designing, and illustrating in her studio. She lives and works on the west coast, where she finds inspiration in the beaches, redwoods, and mountains of her home state, as well as her favorite books and tales, the stories of the people around her, and the seemingly little but significant moments in life. Slowly but surely her dream of illustrating children’s books is coming true: her first book was published in 2013 with a sequel following in 2014. Amalia’s third book will be released in 2016. In the meantime, her love of exploring, learning, and illustrating keep her happily busy designing new art for The Eclectic Illustrator. She hopes that her work brings a smile to your face and that you enjoy it as much as she enjoys crafting it.

I am a color lover, light writer, postcard collector, star gazer, graphic novel reader, beach bum, and (sketch)book enthusiast who finds inspiration in the world around me. That inspiration spills over into my work as an illustrator and designer.
