How did you start your shop? How does it all work?

I have spent over twenty years helping children and families deal with the after effects of trauma, abuse, and a multitude of life stressors. In order to help keep myself sane (or at least moderately so) I have always used creativity as a means to care for my mental health and also show my caring for others.

After years of hearing from friends and family members, "You really should sell your things!" I decided it was time to do just that and follow my dreams as an artist. I had always worried that if my art became a business, that perhaps it would lessen my creativity or enjoyment of the process. Happily, the opposite has been the case! Since deciding to officially launch Eden Design Garden, I have found myself flooded with inspirations and ideas for new techniques and projects.

I often describe myself as being both very right brain and left brain. So, I not only get a thrill out of "thinking outside the box" and coming up with creative and unique approaches to my art, but I also love learning about the technical side of the business, organizing and labeling my supplies, and tracking the data on spreadsheets.

I draw my inspirations from both typical and atypical sources. You know you've been hanging out at the art supply stores a lot when you can direct the other customers where to find things better than some of the employees. However, the same can be said regarding my frequent appearances at the local hardware stores and recycling centers.

I am particularly excited about the etched metal pieces I create and often incorporate many re-used and recyled parts into jewelry and artwork. I am always coming up with new things to use my metal etching techniques and foresee this being a never ending treasure trove of possibility.

There have been many "signs" that I am on the right path in following this dream. Though the positive feedback from people as they saw prototypes of designs has been invaluable and at times reassuring, some of the best feedback has been from my kids. When I first gave my daughter the prototype of the fleece and handknit dress to try on, she hugged it and then rolled on the floor saying, "I love it! I love it! I love it!" (followed by her younger brother asking if I would make one for him).

More recently my daughter was hanging out with me in the "studio" (Oh ya, a BIG thank you to my husband for agreeing to let me use our Master bedroom as a work space!) while we both worked on projects and I was practicing my "mommy patience" as she asked questions every few seconds. I was trying to figure out a particularly challenging technical aspect of a new jewelry design and was staring at the components and putting them together in my mind to see what might work. I saw my daughter looking at me and expecting another question, looked at her and said, "Yes?" Instead of a question, she stated, "I like watching you create things Mom. It's neat watching you figure out how to do things and then do them." Wow! All frustrations about being interrupted instantly vanished and I invited her over for a hug and to show her what I was doing.

I know that the drive to create is and always will be a part of who I am and it brings me joy to create something out of "nothing." However, it is statements like those from my children that help me to know that this business is already a success regardless of how much I sell (though of course the grocery store has yet to accept this form of currency!).

I love designing custom pieces of art, jewelry, and clothing for people (and sometimes for pets too)! I enjoy getting some basic pieces of information about what colors, textures, and designs that someone likes, and then adding that to my own ideas in order to create something fashionable, unique, comfortable and fun.
