About ElegantSufficiencies

On Etsy since 2015

This shop was inspired by wedding scraps---scraps of shell pink silk shantung, that is...

...and ivory silk shantung. And tulle. And lace... and organza... well, seamstresses always seem to end up with all sorts of odds and ends hanging around. They're not large enough to make anything really wearable, but that's okay. They're an "elegant sufficiency," a phrase my late mother used often, mostly regarding food. I thought of her when I named this eclectic Etsy shop.

I started sewing when I was 10. Mom tried to teach me, but a few arguments (which culminated in a well-deserved slap on my face) led her to enroll me in lessons at a local fabric store. After graduating from high school, I became a professional dressmaker, mostly specializing in bridal (though I recall hemming a whole lotta jeans in between those wedding dresses...). This business stayed with me while I went to college for a few years (BA), married, had children, and returned to college for another few years (MA). I mostly worked out of my house, but I did have a storefront in Albuquerque's Nob Hill neighborhood for two years.

When my daughters were attending birthday parties in elementary school, I often whipped up a fancy tooth fairy pillow out of satin scraps leftover from all the bridesmaid's dresses and wedding gowns I made during my career. The pillow was meant as a keepsake; something that could still be displayed sitting on a bed or a shelf, long after its tooth-collection purposes became obsolete.

Finally after 20-something years, I quit the business in 2000---tired of hems, zippers, and rush jobs. Then I wrote a cookbook, because what else does a domestic goddess do with her spare time? But I did make an ivory silk shantung wedding dress for my oldest daughter in 2011, then I made a shell pink silk shantung one for my youngest daughter in 2015. I rekindled my love for sewing fancy-schmancy things and I ended up with many scraps of beautiful fabric. What to do? Good thing Etsy came along.

Now, some scraps ended up in quilted wall hangings, but even then, I had leftovers. Not being one to wear silk shantung myself, I decided to resurrect the tooth fairy pillow idea. Which led to ring-bearer pillows... which led to Christmas stockings... which led to an explosion of knitting/crocheting just because I felt like it. So, I'm not going to make big things anymore. In my shop, I'll offer some lovely keepsakes, deliciously warm knitted or crocheted items, and a few varieties of yummy comfort food.

Elegant Sufficiencies is arranged in convenient sections to help you deal with my eclectic pursuits. Perhaps you need an exquisite gift for a beloved granddaughter. Perhaps you need to cuddle up with an ever-so-soft scarf. Or perhaps you'd like to sample The. Best. Granola. Ever. Feel free to join me on most any social media platform you prefer or contact me here.

As for my personal biography: I was born in 1962 in New York. Our family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1968, and I've remained in the Land of Enchantment. I have a husband, two grown-up daughters, and two cutie-patootie grandsons. I'm also a nerd/geek. Hobbies and passions? Grandkids & family; reading & writing; cooking & baking; TV & movies.

The cookbook I mentioned above is called "Cooking for Halflings & Monsters: 111 Comfy, Cozy Recipes for Fantasy-Loving Souls." Please check it out if you're looking for some Middle-earth-inspired cuisine! It is currently available in two forms---you may order a signed paperback with free domestic shipping from Etsy right here:

Or you may order an electronic copy. Here is a link to the Amazon Kindle edition:
