About

Mystical Art for Visual and Spiritual Enjoyment

I started my Etsy shop at the end of January 2012. Making images and objects is something I've done since childhood. But I never thought of selling my work until 2004, while studying art history at Florida State University. As a final project for a medieval Byzantine art class, I made a portable altar. I painted a wood box, and on the front used mosaic glass tiles to create a cross. For the interior of the box I drew a Byzantine style icon of the Virgin, and made a faux True Cross relic. Inside the box was a smaller box with candle and incense. I presented my portable altar to the class and everyone loved it. They even applauded and said, "You should sell those!"

I continued making altar boxes, along with pentacles, paintings, and pastel drawings, but only as a hobby. In 2009, a friend asked me to show at his art festival. I created a small collection of shrines and altar boxes for the event, and received a great response. Another friend suggested Etsy, but I wasn't quite ready for that.

In 2011, I was inspired to start creating again after seeing Rothko paintings and an exhibit of Kurt Schwitters' work at The Menil in Houston. I love abstract art, old buildings, and medieval art both European and Asian.

For several months in 2011 I worked on a collection of items, mostly altar boxes and paintings. I decided it was time to open an Etsy shop, and start a Facebook artist page. I struggled for weeks to come up with a shop name. I knew the shop name had to reflect the theme of spirituality and magic that runs throughout my work. Sometimes that spirituality is drawn from ancient religions, other times it is more modern, artsy, and secular. As someone of a nature-based faith, I wanted a shop name associated with the elements. Out of the dozen names I came up with, Elemental Enchantments stood out above all. Unfortunately the name is too long for Etsy, so I have to officially go by the shorter name Elemental Enchantress. Still though I call my shop and FB page Elemental Enchantments.

Currently the most popular creations at my shop are my wood and wire beaded pentacles. I love making pentacles, and over the years I have designed, crafted, and sold hundreds. I like to think I've taken the old folk tradition of crafting pentagrams with sticks to a new fine art level. I love beads and crystals, and they feature prominently in my work. The pentacle for me is a sacred symbol that represents the elemental forces of creation, protection from negativity, and a spiritual bonding with nature and the cosmos.

Through art it is my goal to honor the divine, and celebrate the beauty and positivity of Pagan spirituality. I am inspired by nature, magic, science fiction, mythology, visual art, history, fantasy, and music. Enriching the spiritual life with beautiful, mystical art grants me happiness and the feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. Thank you for visiting my shop and reading my About page!
