About

Original fine prints inspired by a love my fellow creatures

Each of my etchings is hand printed from an original plate that took me many hours of work and much technical expertise to make. First you need to cut a piece of zinc, polish it until it gleams. Then it is coated with an acid-resisting ground and an image is drawn through this with a sharp stylus.

Next the metal is placed in a bath of nitric acid, which 'burns' away the metal where the lines have been drawn, leaving tiny grooves which will show as fine lines when printed.

The next stage is to clean the metal plate, and make a screen of fine dots with an acid-resisting resin. Once it has been fired, I paint over it with varnish to create textures that look very much like watercolour effects. The areas painted first will be the lightest, those that spend longest in the acid bath will be the darkest.

The plate then needs to be tidied up with some scraping/burnishing before I can start to print an edition (some of the first prints made in the course of this are labelled 'artist's proof' and may be sold outside of the edition).

Finally, etching ink is applied with a stiff card, then carefully wiped with rough cotton 'scrim' until the desired texture and effect is reached. If it is a multiple-plate colour etching, then this process may be repeated 2 ore 3 times for each etching.

So, unlike a giclée, many, many hours of careful work will have gone into every print I make.

Etchings are works of art in their own right, quite unlike most 'prints' on Etsy which are essentially just high-quality photocopies which eventually lose all of their value. In contrast, my prints have a sculptural quality seen close-to, the inks are all natural earth pigments mixed with linseed oil, and will thus will keep and even increase in value with my professional status.

My prints can be found in fine art galleries, I regularly submit new work for prestigious shows in London and the RWA in Bristol, and am building a reputation as a fine artist.
