Hammer & Nail... Mallet & Awl... Let there be LIGHT!

It all started in the basement.

Not the stingy, damp dungeon we all think of, but a bright and pleasant workshop where Mom and Dad occasionally made or fixed something.

A couple years ago, I remembered my childhood of sitting on the stairway to watch Dad make a lamp out of an olive oil can. I asked him to teach me how to make these neat lamps, so he sat me down with a hammer, an awl & a nail and said "Have at Ye" (or something along those lines). It took me awhile, but I got the hang of making patterns with the different tools available to me (I did add my own small paper awl and a buddy of Dad's made me a neat tool that creates thin little lines).

Veering away from Dad's extreme spirals and abstract shapes, I combined my previous studies in children's book illustration into more floral and abstract animal patterns... Which is what you see today.

Growing up in Connecticut, I learned how to make pierced olive oil tin lamps from my dad. His were much more abstract with beautiful spirals while mine have taken a turn towards nature's flora & fauna.

This is my dad. Wonderful fellow and maker of the salvaged wood lamp bases.
