Announcement   Hello! Welcome to Elu Gallery, the mother-daughter Etsy art shop by Merike Lugus and Paula Tiberius!

Look around and enjoy! You can buy original linoleum cut prints in custom colors from Paula Tiberius, or whimsical and enigmatic acrylic paintings by Merike Lugus.

Merike Lugus's artist statement:

"I have been painting for over thirty years and have had many solo shows both at home and abroad. Most recently I have been moving away from more figurative work and am reaching out towards more abstraction, more freedom of expression in flow and color. In my vision, I aim for the simplicity of Matisse, yet seem to gravitate towards the more intricate exuberant expression of Hundertwasser. Artists are constantly working with tensions they must resolve, and I find this one very challenging, interesting and joyous."

Paula Tiberius's artist statement:

"I am an artist in many media - film, music, books and art - and I keep track of it all at my website www.paulatiberius.com. I have been making linoleum cut prints since I was a teenager and have always been fascinated by the challenge of having to render images within the parameters of positive and negative only. I work mostly from photographs and love to create portraits if asked."

I would never have guessed that I would love this as much as I do. It was hard to give it away as a gift as I had planned...I managed, but I'll be back!

About

Mother Daughter Art Project

This is a mother / daughter shop where I create linocut prints and my mom, Merike Lugus, creates original (and awesome!) paintings. Also, I do all the talking. It's not that mom is afraid of computers - she would just rather be painting. But we both love the supportive vibe at Etsy, and how handcrafted things are so well respected here.

Merike (weird to call your mom by her first name) has been showing paintings and sculptures in galleries since the 1970's and I dare say has had quite a hifalutin art experience in her life. Yet she is the furthest thing from hifalutin. She would much rather get into a deep conversation with a homeless person on the street than talk to an art critic. Not that there's anything wrong with art critics. This is why she loves the Etsy concept - bringing art to the people! She loves the lack of pretension, the lack of walls, and the presence of actual enthusiasm for bringing home a piece of work, rather than merely revering it on a stark wall in a pricey neighborhood. This isn't to say she doesn't frequent art galleries, but her heart is in the creating.

Having grown up with these values, and add to that my father's painting experience over the years, I've come to also value the process of creating. Right now I'm working simultaneously on a new short film, my second novel, and a kid's record. It's all about doing the 'work' for me; that brings me the most joy. I hope I'm imparting that to my little girl. Hey - maybe she'll join the shop one day!

In the meantime, please enjoy our work - mine are the linocuts, though I'm so inspired by my mom's pieces that you might see my trying my hand at painting, and my mom's work is the acrylic paintings, though I'm also trying to talk her into putting her amazing light fixtures on here too. And maybe her sculptures.

This shop will be under perpetual construction and growth. Thank you for visiting!

I'm a writer, filmmaker, musician and visual artist. I love the handmade aesthetic at Etsy and the way it kicks my ass to finish prints. It's also been really fun to bond with my mom and talk about art with her. More me at www.paulatiberius.com
