About

Radiating Vintage Love

Thanks for stopping by my shop Embers Cinders Vintage, bringing you stylish vintage clothing from all eras to incorporate into your modern wardrobe.

My name is Sarah and I was born into an appreciation for vintage.

Raised in Hawaii by a large extended family, I was always part of an extensive hand-me-down system. Being one of the younger children and a late arrival on the scene meant that vintage clothing was inevitably in the mix for me. Frequently the older “pre-loved” clothing turned out to be my most treasured pieces.

I acquired an appreciation for history from my family; from verbal histories to the story suggested by an object, a gown, or a piece of jewelry. My love of history is also (somewhat paradoxically) why I don't tend to hang on to the vintage items I come across. I was brought up to believe that items needed to be passed on to someone else for them to use and enjoy.

My love of vintage developed into a business over time naturally, I simply followed my passion and one day realized there was no going back. Having cultivated the patience, skill and love of the hunt to comb through stacks of items to unearth something special, I love the idea of buying pieces that have a history of their own and restoring them or re-homing them, so that they may "live again” to accumulate a fresh meaning and be part of a whole new series of memory-making.

I opened my etsy shop in 2009, more out of curiosity than anything. In the early days career demands prevented me from dedicating much attention to it. Meanwhile, my closet swelled with items I’d collected.

Today I’m happy to be in a place professionally where I have the ability to devote my time fully to this passion project; Etsy has helped me achieve this and I am very grateful for that.

I’m inspired by so many facets of what I do; whether it’s something as small as the beautiful scrollwork on a celluloid button, the delicate, shimmering glass beadwork on 20s flapper dresses, or the vindication of pouring hours of cleaning, detailing and restoration into the resuscitation of a garment then seeing said garment incorporated into a new owner’s wardrobe. It’s the injection of the “old” into a modern arrangement, and seeing this item live again and again or live on that keeps me on the hunt.

Thank you for taking the time to “meet” me! Feel free to shoot me a message via Etsy convo if you have any questions about the items in my shop or if you need me to source something specific for you!

Frequently asked questions

What payment methods do you accept? Do you accept returns?

We accept credit cards and PayPal.

Any item that you order should be carefully examined immediately upon receipt. If you find that the item is not as described and shown in the photos (that includes measurements) you should contact me with this information within 14 days. Otherwise items will be considered to be as described.

Do you offer layaway?

Yes! Layaway is available on select items. Please convo us if you are interested in setting up a layaway plan for an order. Layaway is offered on a case by case basis of approval and on higher priced items. A non-refundable deposit of 40% of the purchase price is required, with smaller 20% follow-up installments due thereafter. Full payment is generally required in 30 days.

Do you reserve items?

Yes! We do! Please convo us by clicking the "ask a question" link on the item page of the listing you are interested in. Items that are reserved over 5 business days without payment will be released. We reserve the right to refuse reserve requests.

About vintage items

All of the items at embers / cinders are vintage and pre-owned. I provide the maintenance, care, and upkeep required to preserve the quality of each item.

Vintage items may show some wear and items may not be 100% free of minor defects, as they are pre-loved. Please read item descriptions closely and if you feel we neglected to mention something in said description upon receipt, please convo us to discuss this. Our end-goal is your happiness.

All the items here titled "Vintage" have had rich, full, previous lives of 20 or more years. I DO NOT knowingly sell fake vintage or cheap-o reproductions. I scowl at the thought. If you question an item or have useful information, please message me.

Do you charge sales tax?

Yes, but only for California and Los Angeles county residents.

How do you ship, how often and to where?

We ship daily for items received before 3pm, except Sundays and USPS (US Postal Service) holidays, with most domestic packages shipping via USPS Priority mail unless otherwise stated in the listing. We ship First Class for International orders.

For those purchasing an item priced over 250 dollars, or purchasing a vintage wedding dress or gown: I will send the item via registered mail AND require a signature. This is for your own protection.

I ship internationally with the exception of the occasional item that is SO HEAVY and / or bulky that to ship it would be more expensive then the cost of the item itself.

International buyers, please be aware of your country's customs fees and do NOT ask me to alter customs forms.

Do you offer overnight shipping or expedited shipping?

Yes. If you need an item shipped via an expedited service, whether overnight or Global Priority, message me imediately to work out timelines and expectations as well as to discuss additional fees.

Measurements for vintage garments

Please convo me and we can discuss your specific needs or provide more detailed measurements, fit information or photographs.

Regarding fit issues and vintage clothing: It's very important to own and USE a measuring tape when buying items online. In addition, do not go by your body measurements. Always compare measurements given with a similar item that fits you well.

Vintage sizes and modern sizes are incredibly different, a vintage size 14 is not anywhere near the modern size 14 equivalent. Trust only in the measurements. I can't stress this enough.
