About

Natural History Needed Some Fancying Up!

This whole thing started when I realized that other people liked collecting the unusual and whimsical, too! I had seen hundreds of bare-bones museum-like displays of insects under glass, bones and skulls on stands, gothic inspired jewelry with a morbid touch...but I have a different style. I love seeing nature in the raw, sure, but sometimes it's nice to brush away the dirt and dead leaves and see the best specimens on offer....in the best settings on offer!

That was my goal with this little enterprise: I wanted to make my insects an art form, not just a black-and-white display. I work hard on each and every box and diorama I show here, hours and hours of planning and work.

My process goes like this:
1. I buy a specimen from a butterfly farm or scientific taxidermy company (such as Insect-sale.com)
2. I doodle and plot and scheme until the perfect "setting" for my specimen comes to mind! This usually involves lots of scribbling in my notebooks and staring out the window.
3. I go shopping! Sometimes this is my favorite part...and I go a little overboard. That's ok, I'll use that stuff later.
4. I disappear into my chilly basement workshop and don't come out for most of the day. I will not stop until the project is finished! This occasionally requires caffeinated beverages.

I work hard to make these little works of art- not just to sell, but for me to enjoy as well! The finished product, the glimmer of iridescent butterfly wings next to bold brass watch parts..!

...I think it really brings something to the table. Don't you?

(Also, I am proud to say that all of my frames and most of my dioramas are museum-sealed, which means that the specimen should never be damaged by aging! ...Unless you keep it in the sun. Don't do that.)

I'm a traveler and absolutely ravenous collector of "bare taxidermy"- natural historical specimens preserved basically as-they-are. Bones, insect specimens, teeth and so on! I'm very pleased to share my obsession with you!
