About

Each piece is unique

To begin any project, I first must hand draw the art that will be applied. Then I cut a piece from a whole side of veg tanned leather, dampen it, and wait until the moisture is just right. Then, stylus in hand, I gently trace the pattern that will become a new work of leather art. With a few stokes on the strop, the swivel knife is now sharp enough to begin cutting along the lines left by the stylus. The mallet in one hand and a stamp in the other, I begin to tool the image into the leather. Guide the tools along the cuts, and around the border. Then the modeling tools fine tune the details, and I settle in for the long wait of the leather to dry, it can not be rushed. Tiny brushes and dyes are brought to bear on the now dry leather, saturating into the pores of the hide for a permanent bond. Colors are blended, shaded, and highlighted to give even more depth and character to the tooled image. Again, I must wait. The dye must cure, patience is key. The dye is ready for topcoats of waxes and oils to protect the leather for years to come. If a project has an edge or seam to be laced, I prepare the hole punch for the line scribed along the edge. Many holes later, the leather lace is ready to be guided by hand through each and every hole and woven into a sturdy double or triple loop stitch. A final polish of wax and preservatives, and I have brought another unique piece of leather art to life...

I was lucky enough to get to grow up in a very artistic and crafty household. Each member of my family has one or more Artistic talents. Since I am the youngest I was exposed to many different mediums to express myself. My dad tooled leather and I inherited all his tools when he passed. (thanks Dad!)I have been drawing most of my life and I have been tooling leather as a hobby for years. I am passionate about any item that I make and put *good Energy* into each piece I create. I think that things made with joy and pleasure in the heart carry that energy with them. I never work when I'm grumpy as that would affect the 'feel' of the piece. I have been creating leather goods as gifts and doing custom Art for friends/family/Co-workers and it has grown into a demand that brings me here... so, I have now decided to start selling here on Etsy.
