Submerged Series
I paint figures underwater, immersing my subjects in their surroundings. A person’s reflection in water is a constantly changing self, a distorted image with many sides. They view their world from a strange, limited perspective. Near the surface, the familiar blends into the unknown. Color and shape break down. Things that seem separate become entwined.
Water is the place of origins, a vital source of renewal. It is an overwhelming and transformative force. Both life and death, existing in the same place as a continuation. Making up most of our planet and most of our bodies, it is the connectedness of things. My work deals with realism and abstraction, boundaries and potential, the hidden subconscious and expanding consciousness.

Erika lives to make stuff. She earned her BA in Studio Art from CSU Channel Islands, where she began her water portrait series. She has also dabbled in animation, illustration, murals, digital art, and dressmaking.
