Announcement   Welcome to my shop.
I am a retired rock and soils technician and an artist at heart! I have long been fascinated and inspired by the beauty of rock and stone and I let my artists' eye guide me in my rock carving and jewelry creations. By its' very nature, each rock is a one-of-a-kind creation and by modifying it to suit myself, I make it my own. They may sometimes be very similar in appearance, but each item is unique in this world. All of my items are produced and stored in a totally smoke-free environment! Thanks for looking......:)

About

Rocks in My Head

I grew up in New Mexico and spent a lot of time as a kid wandering the wilds from Hobbs to Albuquerque, as well as summers in Colorado at my uncle's ranch. I think this was the start of my lifelong love of rocks and geological formations.

After decades as an agate hunter, I have a trained eye for finding beautiful stones. It is a hobby to always have an eye to the ground wherever I travel. Lake Superior agates and Apache Tears are some of my favorites to find lying out in the open when you walk the shores, trails and gravel pits in Minnesota and Arizona.

I have an artistic background and have always sketched, painted, welded sculpture from found objects, and dabbled in carving. My love of rocks led me to a 20-year career as a rock and soils lab technician, working with aggregates and becoming an expert at specific gravity and other details of rock specifications and measurement.

Now that I'm retired, I am able to dedicate time to enjoying stone-craft. It is an incredible experience to begin with a rough stone, that is beautiful on its own, then to be led by the shape or color to rings, bracelets, pendants, and more recently sculpture. The natural fissures in the rock dictate what it can be used for. I never discard rock chip waste from larger carvings. Those are collected, polished and used in bracelets and necklaces.

Rocks aren't perfect. Each stone is unique and maybe that is the beauty that I cannot get out of my head. Rocks are formed over millions of years, under certain geological conditions, and with the presence or absence of minerals and other deposits.

I love to find for myself the stone I use, but I am not able to travel the whole world, so some stones are purchased from individuals, off of ebay or from friends that travel. I am not a certified gemologist. However, I am trained in geological material identification and specific gravity of stone. I conduct testing on stone before I use it, to confirm what it is and what kinds of tools, pressure and polishing techniques work best with it. For example, soft stone like turquoise doesn't require the same tools necessary to create a pendant that would be required on nephrite jade.

My studio is located in the basement of my home and partly in my garage. Some slabbing of stone with a diamond edge wet saw is too messy to perform in my house - I do those activities in the garage workshop area. Most finishing work and detail carving with flexible shaft dremel tools and multiple rock polishing stations are done in my basement studio.

I dedicate my time to stone-craft. It's incredible to begin with a rough stone, beautiful on its own. I allow the natural fissures to guide my use of color and shape when hand carving these rings, bracelets, pendants, and sculpture from solid stone.
