About

My work as an Artist: Esperanza Expressive Arts

The arts have been a passion of mine since I was kid. We’d walk to the arts and crafts truck that came to our grammar school on Saturday mornings. For less than a dollar, you could make mosaic ashtrays, embossed leather trinkets and beaded key-chains. I couldn’t wait to go and see what they offered and what I could try my hand at, I loved all of it. At about age 7, I began to play guitar and eventually studied classical and currently flamenco guitar. That desire to work in a variety of medium and art forms stayed with me, informing my work as an artist to this day.

Initially I worked in fine arts; primarily charcoals and acrylics, exhibiting and selling original and reproductions. I sought opportunities to combine my love of the arts and my work in healthcare, hence coming across the expressive arts. I like to say that utilizing the arts in a therapeutic fashion helps us to express that which is otherwise unspeakable. We give outward form to the inner life.

In 2002 I received a certificate as an Expressive Arts Facilitator, facilitating workshops and small groups for various populations. I am fortunate to be a three-time award recipient, both national and international, from Sigma Theta Tau for my work utilizing the arts in addictions and recovery titled, “Metamorphosis, the Road to Recovery” and “I Grieve, an Application of the Expressive Arts in the Grieving Process.” I’ve authored work and lectured locally and nationally on the topic of the arts in healthcare. I was blessed with a measure of success in my field.

My life changed significantly in 2007. I became ill starting with limited use of my right arm and ultimately more widespread pain, making any activity almost impossible. Eventually, I began to draw, paint, and make woven wall hangings. I began studying flamenco guitar. Medically speaking, these arts activities should’ve been contraindicated. Yet, while they were and still are difficult to do at times, I attribute the arts to my recovery; physically, emotionally and spiritually.

One day while changing my guitar strings, I recalled hearing that people had made jewelry out them. I made a few bracelets and while wearing them out, someone saw them on my wrist and offered to buy them. That was the start of my jewelry making. I began to exhibit and show my artwork again. Wanting a venue where I could exhibit all of my art interests in one place, I created my Facebook page: “Esperanza Expressive Arts” and opened my Etsy shop, as “Esperanza Art Gallery” in January of 2015.
Thank you so much for your interest in my work!
Peace and Blessings,
Christina

Additional policies and FAQs
Each piece of jewelry is designed from recycled or new guitar strings. Guitar strings are made from natural and man-made materials including: nylon, metals and alloys: steel, nickel, copper, brass, bronze, titanium. Over time, each string develops its own unique characteristics. Tarnish, rust, discoloration, wear and tear, body chemistry and quality and quantity of play of the guitarist, humidity, and other environmental factors will influence the look and feel of each string. This makes each piece slightly unique. Actual color of bead, guitar strings or wire may vary slightly from photo. Actual charm(s) may vary depending upon availability. I strive to represent my work as close to the photographs as possible.

Size: Please use sizing chart when ordering bangles. For sizes not listed, not a problem! Follow the direction on "How to measure for a Bangle" include a "Note to the Seller" and contact me prior to ordering.

Care: Clean with a dry cloth, soft toothbrush or sponge to remove debris. Avoid getting wet!
I have slept, cooked, worked, swam, gardened and basically lived in mine, and while the strings often hold up, occasionally the accent wires, charms or beads may discolor/tarnish, especially from the swimming pool. ~ best advice is to avoid excess water. Metal strings may rust. Avoid pulling at loose or unwinding pieces of wire or wound metal. Instead, using a plier, pinch loose edges back together to prevent injury or further damage to jewelry. A small drop of jewelry glue applied to a loosened wire may work to re-fasten.

Allergy: If you have a nickel allergy, unfortunately my jewelry may not be the best idea for you, as I have no way of knowing if there is nickel in the recycled strings I use. I may however be able to special order new nickel-free strings, or, use nylon strings. Please contact me to discuss prior to ordering.

Your Strings: I am often asked if I can use a customer's strings, or loved ones strings for the order. Yes! That makes a more personalized gift. Contact me ahead of time to discuss what you have for strings, and we can determine which pieces of jewelry would be most appropriate.

Anyone who donates strings will receive a discount code for future purchases.~ and yes, I can always use more strings!

Hand Woven Wall-Hangings: Each wall hanging is a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of fiber art that takes hours to create from various fibers (listed) and occasionally beads and found objects. Please note in the description whether the ends are tied off or left open to hang with a rod.

Fine art prints: Prints are signed, reproductions of my original art. Each print will be shipped in a special protective sleeve. Avoid hanging in direct sunlight.

Custom orders are welcome!
