About

Artist who loves to draw nature now making those drawings into unique original etchings!

I wanted a simple place to show and sell my accumulating etchings and other artwork so my Etsy shop "EtchingsPlus" was created.
Art has always been a love of mine but the usual activities of raising a family and working, as a pediatric occupational therapist, always put this other enjoyment on the back burner. During those busy life years, in the pockets of time one makes for oneself, I discovered the process of making etchings and other original art printmaking processes. Then I worked to be trained and certified in botanical illustration, and it was a natural, and much loved, transition, to learn to turn those illustrations into etchings.
There is much "misunderstanding " about fine art printmaking being original artwork. This has become an even greater public misunderstanding with the advent of Giclee prints. The difference is simply explained! Giclee prints, and other computerized prints, are copies or reproductions of a work of art. These are everywhere today as a means to make artwork affordable to the general public as such a print is very like the original but is one of many, often thousands, of reproductions of that original piece. BUT these are quickly made COPIES, not originals.
Fine are printmaking is completely original, and intensive time and enjoyable effort is necessary to produce each piece. An edition may be printed, though EACH ONE is unique and totally created by the artist. It will also be signed and numbered as a print, but the numer of total pieces in the edition will likely be small, such as 1/12, one of 12. There will always be slight variations in this edition making each unique. These "prints" are entirely created by the artist or with assistance of a master printmaker, not a computer.
Etchings, wood and linoleum cuts, collographs, are examples of fine art printmaking. The edition creating of printmaking goes way back to Renaisance artists as a way to make original art more affordable than other artwork created as one of a kind.
If you are interested in understanding more about fine art printmaking processes please continue to explore my Etsy shop and also those of other printmakers. Many include photos and explanations of the artist's processes.
Enjoy exploring and better understanding a wonderfully addictive form of creating original artwork which Rembrandt and Picasso and many great artists loved as much as I do!

I got my Takach etching press, "Mary Jeanne", (named after my greatest supporter, my Mom) a few years ago. This really began my love of printmaking!
I was honored to be Artist in Residence in the Rocky Mountain National Park in the summer of 2012, and have been thrilled to add many wonderful animals to my enjoyment!

Welcome, and thank you for visiting my ETSY shop. I am an artist who enjoys nature as my usual resource for material. I love drawing and painting and have been certified as a botanical illustrator. Though plants are always a returning subject in my art, I also love animals and people as subjects. I now have my own etching press to turn my drawings into intaglio artwork, so this will be a big part of my ETSY shop, EtchingsPlus.
In brief, intaglio is a category of fine art printmaking which uses a press to draw inks out of grooves or other impressed markings made on a plate of metal. The etching process may be so traditional, as was used hundreds of years ago, using acid baths and ground on the metal to etch and save parts of an image as desired by the artist. Or, other safer methods of today utilize the sun or ultraviolet light to transfer a drawing to a special polymer plate, then lightly wash in water to see the image etched. I use both these methods in my work. Both methods give similar but different results for en etched plate which then is painstakingly inked and wiped for each print pulled on the press. Thus, each print is a unique handmade work of original fine art. The variety of methods used in the actual printing process can vary the results of a printed plate significantly and this is what delights, and also may frustrate, artists as they create intaglio fine artwork!
I will try to describe the processes used on any particular item in my shop but welcome any questions or discussion. Enjoy looking and thanks for your interest and support!

Larger prints and large Giclee prints may be shipped in an archival bag and rolled in a mailing tube. I will typically use USPS Priority shipping which includes tracking, confirmation and insurance for United States orders. If you require expedited shipping please let me know and I will adjust shipping cost and my usual procedures.
International orders will be shipped First Class USPS unless you request a faster significantly more expensive method.

My customers' satisfaction is of great concern to me so please let me know within 7 days of receipt of the item if there are any concerns or damage which you might be unfortunate to experience and I will do my best to fix it.
