About EtheraPeril
Atelier Peril - I made it myself!
My fixation with sewing began when I was about 11 or 12. My best friend and I wanted to dress up as Xena and Gabrielle for Halloween. As the blonde kid, I was to be Gabrielle. My mom bought me a green turtleneck and sewed some velour to the front, and wrapped a big sheet of stretchy fabric around my waist for the skirt. While it was more than many moms would do, it was still the biggest Halloween disappointment since that Michelle Pfeiffer cat woman costume that looked like a garbage bag. I nearly died of envy when I saw my friend's meticulously handmade pleather Xena costume. She exuded coolness. It was like seeing Xena in the flesh, only about three feet shorter and with a chakram made of a margerine lid wrapped in duct-tape. Awesome!
Using remnants of that hideous green velour, I began my sewing odyssey by trying to hand-sew clothes for my barbie dolls, and that was as far as I got until the later years of high school, when someone finally showed me how to follow a sewing pattern and thread a machine!
After recreating many costumes with only photographs to go on, and working in fabric stores, I gained a wealth of knowledge about fabrics, notions and all sorts of products and techniques. I love making costumes based on films, video games and anime - historical patterns are another joy for me. Putting on those incredible clothes puts you in a whole new state of mind. The more challenging the design the more interesting I find the work. Right now I am in a Steampunk phase. I also love the Cyber-Goth aesthetic.
As an extension of my costuming hobby I got in to making jewellery about 3 years ago. I work with silver plated metals and glass beads, but occasionally gunmetal, brass, and copper tones sneak in.
Drawing is something I have been doing my entire life, and I look forward to uploading more examples of my work soon.
I'm a former student of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, interested in creating my own business that allows me to do the things I love every day and connect people with awesome handmade fashion.
