Wir sind Selber-Macher

HISTORY
Featherfin Yarn was founded in 2014 and with it, dyeing yarn grew from a way to individualize my fiber crafts to the most fantastic way to support my life and education.

FFY just moved into my 9 square meter home studio, where I can now dye, photograph and store the yarn, before it goes out to yarn lovers all over the world.

Personally, I started to work with hand dyed yarn, because I found it much more interesting than industrial yarn. I enjoy how you can work through the different hues while knitting and how the color changes are much less predictable. And I like how the marbling makes the fabric a lot more intriguing.

ABOUT FEATHERFIN YARN

My colorways for Featherfin Yarn are mostly cool toned and naturally marbled through the pot-dyeing technique I use. In this particular process, the acid dye travels organically through the water between the fibers and produces patterns that are unique to every skein.

I choose my yarn bases for their softness and versatility. When looking for new qualities, I look for interesting materials and structures or if they will fulfill a particular function, like a cooling summer yarn.
Usually, I tend towards yarn bases containing small amounts of precious fibers, because of their luxurious feel and how they influence the yarn's properties. If you add silk, for example, the yarn begins to drape differently because of the long fibers. And just with a little percentage of cashmere, you gain quite a lot of warmth and coziness.

Additionally, if I take the time to dye a yarn by hand, I want it to be special and feeling worth of a splurge. Especially when you or I are going to take hours and hours afterward, crafting it to a piece that we want to wear for years.

ABOUT ME

Last but not least, a few words about me. I am a 24 years old chemistry graduate from a technical university near Frankfurt, Germany. My husband and I live in a little suburban neighborhood, close enough for him to commute to work and for me to get to my classes. I now attend lectures in business IT part-time, while trying to balance it with running a small business from home.

In my free-time, I like to meet up with friends, do a little yoga or jogging for my health and, obviously, crafting with my yarn! My favorite part of the day is when I get to spend a cozy evening with my husband, netflixing and enjoying a meal we cooked together.

I am very thankful for the wonderful life that I am leading and for the chance to support it with something that brings me so much joy. I especially want to thank everybody that loves to work with my creations! It is an indescribably proud feeling to see the wonderful things they are crafting with my Featherfin Yarn.

If you are per chance posting your FFY projects on social media, please tag me @featherfinyarn!

Have a nice day and happy crafting,
Belinda

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

The Merino fibers in the yarn bases Super Sock, Soft & Silky and Cashmerino are superwash treated. You can wash this yarn with a gentle setting at 40 degrees Celsius in a washing machine.

The other yarn bases are hand wash only. My personal advice would be to wash your hand dyed natural fiber garments only when really stained.

Fine fibers regenerate themselves and you can keep them fresh with an occasional spritz of clear alcohol (I use vodka in an old perfume flacon). This will kill most odor producing bacteria and preserve your precious work.

Custom and personalized orders

Yarns that can be dyed on order are marked as PREORDERs. These colors will be dyed together, for you personally.

This procedure could take 5-10 working days, depending on the current workload of my dyeing studio and the weather conditions, as I mostly dry my yarns outside.

Preorders can only be cancelled in the first 12h of ordering, as I have to start the yarn pretreatment on the evening before dyeing.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Featherfin Yarn will be shipped in boxes, to spare them any additional agitation due to the transport. I also prefer to not seal them in plastic, as I think the smell compromises the quality of the yarn. If I use shipping bags for the outside packaging, they are bio-degradable.

I plan to offer gift wrapping in the near future!

Wholesale availability

Please send an inquiry to info@featherfinyarn.com for wholesale conditions.

Yarn Origins

The cashmere content in the Cashmerino and Tencel Lace base is Mongolian Cashmere. All merino fibers are labeled as Australian Merino.

Tencel is a regenerative fiber made from bamboo, produced by Lyocell in Austria.

The raw yarns for the Super Sock and Soft & Silky lines are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified and mulesing free!
