About FORAMOMENTPORTRAITS

Sales 221
On Etsy since 2015

For a Moment is a portrait service for families experiencing the loss of a baby through prematurity, miscarriage, illness, or trauma.

My name is Kristin Steffen. This is the story of why I started this mission.

Back in 2010 I was 13 weeks along and my water broke. My husband and I rushed to the hospital, thinking our baby had died. Having an ultrasound, we saw him and his beating heart. Even though the hospital offered to terminate the pregnancy, "because there was less than 1% survival", we opted to let nature take its course. What ended up happening was my little guy stayed inside me for 15 more weeks. His heart was always beating, but my amniotic sac never resealed. I was told he would be born without lungs, deformed, and other things, but as long as he was alive, I would keep him where he needed to be--inside me.

During that time, I found a support group on facebook with other mommies going through what I was. Every single one of us did what we could to give our babies the best chance possible. Some had success stories, some didn't. Every day we dealt with the reality of our situation and what we'd want if our babies went to Heaven. The biggest one was, we didn't want them to be forgotten. I grieved with these women that lost their babies, and felt so sad when they'd post pictures on Facebook or other social media, only to be asked to take the pictures down because they made people feel uncomfortable. I met other women who didn't even have a chance to meet their babies face-to-face. These little ones that they sacrificed so much for. These babies needed to be remembered. Then, I remembered over a decade ago, my brother and SIL lost their son at 20 weeks gestation. They only had a low quality polaroid. He had the typical signs of a preemie at that time too. They asked me to draw him. I did and I knew other people could benefit from this service too.

So, I do this because of my little boy Luke, who was born at 28 weeks. He was in the NICU for 11 weeks, is now 4 years old and has no health problems. His lungs that were never supposed to develop obviously work quite well. He never, EVER stops talking. smile emoticon I do this for all my brave friends in my pPROM support group. I do this for my nephew Nathaniel who is with his Grandma Char (my mom) in Heaven, and I do this for you. When you contact me and trust me with the memory of your baby, I can't tell you how grateful and honored I feel. Every family deserves a photo of their baby.

And that's why I do what I do.
