About

I love the platform Etsy provides for their sellers. It's a platform that allows an interaction between the seller and buyer. Our customers send us photos of their completed projects and we share their excitement. I never knew I would make so many friends in this business. A customer and a talented handbag designer, Elizabeth, and I began to chat about our projects. She mentioned her desire and fears about this product she was curious about, cork leather (cork fabric/cork cloth << any of those are acceptable "where's that happy face emoji?" lol). I began to research and became obsessed with getting my hands on it. I did!! I researched its sustainability and the way in which it is made. All of the fabric in this shop is made in Portugal and is of the highest quality. The cork is harvested from the Cork Oak tree. It's the only tree that actually thrives from the removal of its bark. These trees live and provide cork for up to 200 years. The cork is removed, boiled, and processed. The cork is shaved to the approximate thickness of tissue paper and applied to backing. All of the Cork Fabric in the shop have a fabric/felt-like backing made from a blend of cotton, polyester and polyurethane. This backing allows the cork fabric the stretch and pliability that makes for a beautiful end product. It's easy to work with and is suitable for your at home sewing machine.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the cork fabric from?

All of the cork fabric in my shop is from Portugal, harvested and manufactured.

What is a cork oak?

The cork oak is the tree that cork is harvested from. These trees grow in humid, low rain coastal climates in Italy, Portugal, Spain, France, and Northern Africa. Cork is the bark from the tree. It's the only tree that actually thrives from the removal of its bark. Cork is a wonderful sustainable natural resource, as it grows back for many harvests. The cork oak can live up to 250 years. Conservation organizations have been fighting to keep Cork Oaks. As demand drops for cork, farmers remove cork oaks to plant citrus trees and other more profitable trees. So, purchasing cork fabric is not only eco-friendly and vegan, it is actually helping conserve these beautiful trees.

What is Cork?

Cork is the bark from the cork oak tree. (Read about the cork oak at WWW.FABRICFUNHOUSE.COM)

How is cork fabric made?

Once the cork is harvested from the cork oak, it is boiled, dried, and shaved into thin sheets. These sheets are about as thin as tissue paper and are very porous. The sheets are applied to an appropriate backing that will complement the color of the cork. The backing can be cotton, polyester, or polyurethane. The fabric in my shop, which is made in Portugal, has a fabric backing made from the three. This backing is preferred by many because it gives the fabric a pliability that is easy to use with desired results.

Shipping Info

All orders are carefully rolled, sealed, and packaged. Each order will ship priority, and most orders are shipped same day!

How do I clean the cork fabric?

You can create a soap and water mixture and clean with a sponge. Cork is naturally water resistant.

I see that your cotton fabric shop, Fabric Funhouse, offers free shipping on orders over $50. Does that apply to this shop too or can I combine orders?

One of the reasons Fabric Funhouse Cork was opened was because I still wanted to offer free shipping on my quilter's cotton. Because cork fabric has to be rolled there isn't a flat rate box that it would fit in. I actually pay part of the shipping on most orders.
