About FaceoftheEarth

Nature in an unnatural world.

Terrariums started as a way to bring my true love for nature indoors, and through making them as gifts and finding the joy others can find from something my hands made from the earth, it instilled the idea of a exploring a whole new approach to share my creative outlet with others.
I graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan with my degree in Illustration. Mixing medias was always a way to challenge and push my limits as well as searching to create something new and uncommon. Living in New York I found the lack of natural surroundings to be a struggle, so bringing what I could inside kept me going. I now live and work in Portland, OR where nature is flourishing on every sidewalk and stairway. Those who want to join in my life by caring for a tiny living version of my world is an amazing feeling, and I hope to find more ways to connect with the world creatively by using the internet and the tiny pieces of me to bridge the distance separating us all.

Beginning as a desire to make natures vast beauty small enough to hold, and seeing joy that others experience from my reinterpretations, it instilled the idea to explore a new approach to sharing natures beauty in miniature form.

Thanks for supporting handmade! I make all my organic terrariums with live moss harvested from the forest in my area. Most of my terrariums contain my signature miniature sculptures inside. They are hand sculpted from wax, painted and covored with a fixative to prevent damage. These take some time and dedication, and each terrarium is made with love and preparation for someone to enjoy their own tiny little world!

Moss Terrariums are very easy to care for, spray with a spritz bottle every couple weeks to a month. Keep an eye on your terrarium, signs of overwatering are sopping wet pete moss, excessive condensation (if you cant see your sculpture, you're giving it too much love!)
Open terrariums/lichen terrariums require more watering, just keep the moss moist and lichen a bit stiff. DO NOT PLACE IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT. it will fry your terrarium and before you know it, your moss will turn yellow.
Air Plants: it thrives on the moisture and atmosphere for it's nutrients. Simply spray generously directly on the plant (pretend to give it a rain storm) 2-3 times a week and your plant will thrive. also inside is lichen on a bed of rocks. The glass hangs by a waxed cotton string.
-I include a little fold with instructions for your terrarium care. Please read and follow, and your terrarium will thrive and surprise you with new life!

note: Remember, this is wild moss grown in the woods, As your terrarium is cared for, you will see new and unexpected life to occur. That's the beauty of these tiny worlds! It is a self contained ecosystem in your home or office!
