Obviously Miscellany

My mother taught me to sew when I was seven years old. At first I would pick the fabric and the pattern, cut it out, sew a few seams, then beg her to finish for me. I soon started to buy a bit more fabric than I could cut. Then a bit more. Soon I had a bad case of ABLE - Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy. I still do.

I made most of my skirts and shirts in college. When my kids were little I made most of their clothing. At one point I had to take my sewing machine to a repair shop. They sat on it for two month! When I got it back, the clerk joked that I probably didn't need it anyway. I told him quite truthfully that if it hadn't been in the shop, I'd have made a dozen articles of clothing in that time. It still has an impact on my own wardrobe, but most of what I make now, I sell here.

Faire Miscellany got it's start when I ran a booth in the merchant's room at a Science Fiction convention. I had fun there, but sold more through Etsy that year. I started with capes, rat tails, origami earrings, and bottled cranes. At the time, my daughter was an integral part of the shop. She has since opened her own Etsy store called Little Paper Wing. As a result, most of the origami have moved out of Faire Miscellany.

My daughter, my son, my husband, and a few friends still help me with things like shipping, modeling, and making some of the items I sell. By items I'm talking about spinners, jewelry, etcl None of them are helping with the sewing anymore. Nor do they answer the messages, or generally hang out. It's pretty much just me now.

I tend toward the rustic, shabby chic, rude and crude end of creation. Although I don't have formal training, I've made many of my own patterns and know my way around a sloper. I make historical clothing, but do not try to be historically accurate as historically fun. Although many people don't intend to wear my creations more than once, I try to make everything so that can be tossed in the wash and worn regularly.

Although the shop is now mostly focused on my sewing, I have every intention on including all kinds of miscellaneous things.

Returns and exchange details
If you are not satisfied for any reason you may return the item for a full refund - not including shipping charges. The refund is issued the day the item is received by me in it's original condition. Buyers are responsible for all shipping costs except when an order is canceled before it ships.

I will gladly make alterations for free. You can return items for alteration or repair at any time or as many times as you wish. Simply include enough postage in your package for the return trip. Let me know in advance so I can collect it from the post office quickly.
I accept PayPal, and most major credit cards. Items will be shipped as soon after payment is received as possible (generally the next business day).

Work on Made to Order and Custom Order items will not begin until full payment is received. Check individual listings for how long until I can ship. You may cancel a jewelry order at any time prior to shipping. Sewing projects may be cancelled until the fabric has been cut. Sometimes you can talk me into it even after I've made something if I'm fairly sure I can sell it to someone else. Just don't count on it. In other words it doesn't hurt to ask.
Shipping is a pain. There's just now way around it. Worse, I'll probably end up making you pay for it. I have to because of my generous return policies, my less than minimum wage pricing, and the large amount of money shippers demand for most of what I make. You'd think a three pound cape wouldn't cost so much to haul across country, but there it is.

Generally speaking, bigger things like capes and shirts will ship by 2-Day Flat Rate through the US post office in the smallest regulation container it will fit. Lighter things go by first class which can take as much as a week to arrive. I charge an additional 75 cents for "handling" which almost covers the cost of shipping supplies. Sometimes, especially with custom orders, I have to guess at what the shipping will cost. If I guess very high, I automatically refund the difference. If I guess low, I eat the difference.

I have tried letting Etsy calculate it for me, but their numbers tend to be ridiculously high. Now and then utterly bizarre things will happen with the shipping on a given listing. For instance Etsy has automatically applied Germany rates to a domestic package or only offered express pricing when I had it flagged to offer all possible services. Please let me know! If it looks outlandish, then probably something has gone wrong. I'll gladly fix it as soon as I find out what's up.

I try to ship things as quickly as I can. For items that are already made, that is generally the next day, even if the listing says it will take three days. Most made to order items will go out in about a week. Custom orders - especially if I'm designing something new - can take several weeks. Don't assume it'll be any faster than what the listing says. I give myself wiggle room because sometimes I need it. I ship items that take more than a day to prepare in the order I receive them, except when someone pays an express fee. Express orders get made first. October is crazy with lots of orders and many special requests. Although I go into high gear and can whip out some amazing stuff very quickly, I recommend you order your Halloween costume in September, just to be safe.

For theater productions and other bulk orders, I will set up a custom listing just so I can get the shipping price closer to what it will actually cost even if it's something like a dozen rat tails which I already have on hand. I also offer small bulk discounts and price reductions for simplified items. Contact me. If you are inquiring during October for something you need in November, let me know right off. I will have your order in hand for the dress rehearsal at the latest, or admit I can't work that fast.

For international shipments... I give up. I had too many packages returned unopened. If the buyer said why, it almost always came down to duty fees that I had no part in. For my friends in Canada and Ireland and other parts of the world, you could probably talk me into shipping to you anyway if you convince me that you will at least try it on before you return it.

I DO NOT REFUND SHIPPING - except when you cancel an order before I actually shipped it. Then you get that back as well as the purchase price. I'm not trying to gouge you. I'm just trying to protect myself from the ridicule of friends and neighbors who have accused me of paying my customers for the privilege of working for them because of how much shipping cost I've eaten.

If you want something faster, and it's already been made, then I will gladly set up a listing for you that will collect the difference between what the listing collects and what the faster shipping will cost. If you only pay for first class postage, then you can demand express all you want, but you will still only get first class shipping.
Additional policies and FAQs

I generally try to put the words "Made to Order" in the title of items that I don't have on hand. Unluckily, I'm always going in and out of supply, and don't always remember to update. If you ask me if you can get a particular Poet Shirt or cape, or hat, the answer will be "yes" even if I don't have one on hand because I intend to make one for you.

Conversely there are some items like Simple Pink Rat Tails that may claim I have 50 on hand when I only have three - one of each size. That's because I make and sell them so fast that it's hard to keep them updated. I may have enough fabric on hand to make 50 of them, but I don't have them done yet. I have no intention of putting "Made to Order" in the title since I will generally be able to ship in a day or two regardless. If you call my bluff and order all 50, I will be sending you a convo to confess it's going to take a while to get them all done and out. But then, if you want that many, you should have me set up a custom order for you anyway so we can get a better estimate on shipping costs.

I give myself a couple of weeks to make a Poet Shirt even though it actually only takes 16 hours because it has to wait it's turn in my orders list along with any other big projects. If there's no one ahead of you, and I don't have a machine break down or a hip replaced or any other unavoidable interruption then I might well ship it to you in three days. Don't hold your breath. I like my two week leeway and am loath to give it up if you aren't willing to pay an express service fee.


If you want a shirt with longer or shorter sleeves, to ditch a ruffle, or to change a hem, you can get that through the regular listing. I recommend that put your preferences in the "message to seller" field of the order form AND convo me about it just to be sure I see it. It you convo me, but then don't buy until a couple of weeks later, then a reminder would help. So long as it doesn't add to my base cost or require that I invent pattern pieces, it's just a made to order order. I won't bother to set up a custom order.

If you want different fabric, dye-work that is not already offered in the specific listing, significantly longer hems, or alterations that can't be easily made on the basic pattern, then we are looking at a custom order. Although custom orders do generally cost a little more, I rarely charge more than a dollar or two for the time I spend generating patterns. I mostly just pass on additional costs in things like dye, fabric upgrades, buttons, etc.

Now and then, if a project is something I've been planning on doing anyway, or that I think will be particularly fun, then I will give a discount. In that case, I expect feedback. I mean, I'm giving you a discount because it's a prototype and I want to know how to adjust it for future sales. For instance, both the first Wicked Cape and the first Monk Robe were given discounts. A specific shirt or tail from a movie or anime... probably no discount but I'll do my best to replicate it.

If you send me a picture of a Dragonball Z tail I will probably set up a custom listing for you automatically. It'll cost close to a dragon tail. Yeah, I should break down and just set up a regular listing for the suckers. Maybe someday I will.


You probably noticed from my listings that I do a particular kind of dye work. I use Rit dye, a personally concocted brine of salt and vinegar, and an enormous pressure canner. Some processes take about a day. Some take several times through the works. Some take months. It all depends on what I'm after. I can't guarantee any particular shade. It always comes out at least a little mottled. If you want it more mottled, or less mottled, let me know. Otherwise I'll aim for less on the shirts and more on the capes.

I used a different process for the tie-dyed T-shirts. For them I use soda ash, "cool" heat process, and a fixer. I sometimes use this on the Rustic Cotton or the cotton poly blends, but frankly it's been unimpressive.

Lately I've been experimenting with painting Rit on the fabric. It's gone well, but don't expect me to put a lighter design on a darker background.


If you are in doubt about anything then convo me. Don't try to email. My email gets hundreds of messages a day and is only checked when I have good reason to wade through the spam. I generally swing by here a few times a day, but you'll be lucky to get an immediate reply. It could be hours before I see it.
