Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream?

As a young girl, I spent many a lazy afternoon staring at the beautiful waters of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. At 16, I found my way to Florence, Italy by way of Cyprus. The seashores, villages, and history of this area of the world are truly magical. The art and architecture I saw inspired me, and I began talking more and more to the local people, many of whom had families that lived in these towns for countless generations. They introduced me to local gems speaking both metaphorically and actual. I saw and held pieces of jewelry handmade in these places with small touches unmatched by anything I have seen anyplace else. A woman showed me a bracelet made by her grandfather for her grandmother as a wedding present, and she described to me many of the small markings I saw: an olive tree depicting the tree they first met beneath as children, a small decrepit building I was told was the front of a church they hoped to be married within, and a ship representing their shared dream to spend a lifetime together travelling their country’s shores. I realized the profound art I could find here by viewing the region not only with my own artist’s eyes but by truly seeing the heart of people.

These experiences led me to want to express myself and produce wonderful pieces of art. At the same time, I began a romantic fascination with Victorian and Edwardian England. I began reading novels by Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, studied the paintings of Van Gogh always fascinated with how they were able to bring their deep and complex emotions to life within their art. I love the tortured poetry "a dream within a dream" of Edgar Alan Poe and the inspirational words of Maya Angelou. She once wrote, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I want to not only build my own feelings into my work but to help people feel wonderful when they see or even experience my artistic creations.
