About

The birth of FeatherRoot Artistry

Originating from the North Carolina Piedmont near the Cape Fear River, I grew up spending as much time outside as I could. The natural world always intrigued me and won my entire heart at an earlier stage than I can remember. I could never find more happiness than when I was completely submerged among the pines and scrub oaks, with only the birds' songs, occasional piercing of the osprey's cry and the wind in trees' canopies to stir my mind. When I became of age to start noticing the sewing machine, my mother quickly came to my aid with all of her patience and taught me how to sew my own clothes. After a few years of sewing and a developing interest in the arts, I left my home in the country to study fine art at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2004. Focusing in painting, I also studied sculpture, fiber arts, printmaking, clothing and design, bookmaking and ceramics. Emerging from college as a seasoned barista with a Bachelors degree in Art, I moved to the arts district of Charlotte, known as Noda, and continued on my path of slinging coffee, painting and added photography to the mix. In 2011, after a few years of successful painting and photography shows in Noda, I followed my heart into the mountains and moved to Asheville, North Carolina to study the healing arts. While earning an education in herbal medicine and energy work, I began to fall in love with the mountains of western North Carolina. My heart soon found her happiness again among the old poplars and mountain laurel, boulders, streams and rivers that carved through and sculpted these old hills. It wasn't long until the primitive skills subculture caught my attention and I was introduced to what would grow into a passion for leather working. With a year of leather working under my belt, I found a home and haven at Royal Peasantry Design House in downtown Asheville as a production assistant. Working part time as a seamstress and leather worker for Royal Peasantry and part time self-employed artist under my emerging business, FeatherRoot Artistry, I am finally making a living by living my dreams.

My inspiration for my work thrives off of a deep adoration and communion with nature. With my work, my intentions are always to reflect the beauty and richness of a world that we so often forget about; A world that lives on, unseen, abused, used and taken for granted; A world that needs us to wake up and remember.
