DIY or DIE
I’d like Feigning Sane to be a source of self-expression for those of us who reject a society that treats exploitation, poverty, isolation, and preventable death as ordinary, all while requiring people to continue working, consuming, and carrying on as if we were fine. For people who understand from personal experience that questioning and critiquing the system is generally treated as irrational or extreme, while accepting it without question is considered “healthy” or “successful”.
Everything for sale here on Feigning Sane is made by me. Doing crafts and hands-on DIY projects has been part of my life as far back as I can remember. For better or worse, growing up poor did at least lend itself to developing creative skills. So when I was introduced to the punk scene as a middle-school misfit in Seattle I was immediately drawn in, not only by the angry-yet-fun music but also by the DIY ethos and social causes it fostered. By the time I was around 13 my grandma taught me to use a sewing machine because I wanted to put patches on my jacket and peg my own pants. (Remember that, before skinny jeans were everywhere?) Turns out it wasn’t a phase…now my piercings are 20+ years old, I’m still into the music, and still making things - for a living! DIY or die! 😂🤘🏴
As an Autistic person I aim to use my creations as a platform to raise awareness for important social justice issues, and the diverse human experiences that shape our world. I believe in utilizing creativity and art to make space for marginalized voices and to push back against a system that doesn’t work for us. It’s not simply about fashion or style, but a physical representation of counter-culture and solidarity. By purchasing what I make you are directly helping me make a living with the skills I 𝘥𝘰 have - and that means more to me than I can ever express. Thank you so much for shopping independent and making a difference! Community is resistance🖤
