Express Yourself With Wearable Art

Hello, my name is Wendy. Ever since I was a child I've been expressing myself through art. After I graduated from high school I studied fiber arts, on scholarship, at the Kansas City Art institute. After exploring many forms of art, I discovered felting, a labor intensive process in which thin layers of fibers are transformed into beautiful fabric. As my skill and knowledge grew, I became intrigued with the ideas of wearable art and of making art a part of our daily lives. I use only the highest quality, hand dyed fibers. My emphasis is on craftsmanship and the satisfaction of knowing that I am making something that my customer with love. Something that will allow them to express their individuality through a one of a kind piece of art. And something that will bring them joy for years to come.

Wet felting is an amazing, almost magical process. The wool is combed into long fibers that look almost like hair. These fibers are then placed down carefully in very thin layers. Then the fibers are wet down with warm, soapy water, covered and then the rubbing begins. The rubbing part of the process is labor intensive, but as you rub the magic starts to happen. The fibers start to move around an tangle into a cohesive piece of fabric. No sewing, knitting, or other needle work is needed, just fiber, soap and water, and a lot of "elbow grease". This process is so flexible that, depending on the wool you use, You can make anything from a soft and silky scarf to slippers to a vessel to a hard, long wearing rug.

The scarves I make consist mostly of only two layers of wool, which is usually mixed with silk or Tencel fiber. This produces a very soft, thin scarf that consists of a web of fiber similar to lace. Thus the name "cobweb felt".

I hope that you enjoy wearing my scarves as much as I enjoy making them.
